How are monopolies harmful to the consumer?

Dorky
Monopolies are neither good nor bad, in reality. It depends on how the management manages the business. If the management knows and does what's good for the customers, then it's good as it has the power to do so. Otherwise, it's not good and it still has the power to do so as it's a monopoly.

It all depends on human nature really. If the boss of the company don't give a damn on the customers, he won't care about improving his business. But if he cares, then even if he runs a monopolistic company, he will still keep on improving his business to a higher level that benefit all. But this is a very rare case. Besides, even non-monopolistic companies in competition with each others can't seem to provide good products/services. So who can guarantee that competition is the best for everyone?

Annieo
Monopolies leave the consumer with no option. So if there is no option and no regualtion of the price and product/service, a consumer may be paying ridiculous prices for a low quality product or service. Hope this helps! :)

first you have to know what does monopoly mean.....
monopolizing means.....(economics) a market in which there are many buyers but only one seller... having to controll the price of the product that is why monopoly is harmful to the consumer.... not only the price but they controll the whole market including supply....

dt_05851
Basic economics. Monopolies remove the choice option, thus altering supply/demand. A consumer cannot try to get a cheaper room rate at a hotel if all the hotels in town are owned by one person. A consumer cannot get cheaper groceries if all the stores are owned by one company. It greatly removes choice.
