How can I ask for a raise from a company that does not give raises as company policy?
I was hired as a receptionist at a company three weeks ago. I was "promoted" ( accountant quit) to accounting clerk within two weeks. However, when I asked my boss for a raise to reflect my new responsibilities, she told me that the company does not give raises and I would be "taken care of" through the company bonus (based on company profits and distributed 2x a year). I am still being paid as a receptionist so how do I insist on a salary increase?

Start applying for other jobs. Then quit when you find one that pays you a proper salary.

They can get receptionists for minimum wage any time. You have no leverage.

Maybe there is a reason the accountant quit. Even if the company has some sort of pay rate assigned to each position and they don't give raises, I can't believe that the pay rate for a receptionist would be the same as an accounting clerk. Also, it can't be strictly true that they don't give raises, they must give raises sometimes or everybody would be getting paid the same as they were in 1975! I know that sometimes it is advantageous for companies to give bonuses instead of a higher regular salary, but it sounds like you are being given the runaround. If I were you I would start looking for a new job, maybe wait until the next bonus comes around (probably December?) and if they don't "take care of" you, quit.

If you truly love this company and want to stay there, maybe you can negotiate some other sort of benefit like paid insurance, extra time off, paid lunch, etc.

You can't get a raise, however the process they have in place of a raise is the way most large companies are doing it lately, it has a few advantages to you and them.

The bonus is given to you based on the money the company makes and because it is not part of your salary it is not subject to the same deductions your salary is. They don't have to pay the deductions and neither do you, it's straight cash less the tax, they don't take off things like pension, etc. If the company looses money they don't go after you to reimburse them so it's a win win situation.

If you like your new job, stay with it and you just may be surprised at how much you actually receive in your bonus, it can be more then your pay in some cases.

I've never heard of such a rule. Responsibilities = salary.

If not, start working on getting out of there ASAP.

Good Luck

I would learn what you can. And leave them as soon as you get a better job.
