The first thing you need to do is create something that Starbucks hasn't got, nor could they reproduce. Something like that fish market that's famous now... you know? Is it a smile? the way you treat your customers? The only reason Starbucks is so successful is because they're convenient. Think like you're going to outwit them at their own game.
#1 most important thing... Customers. They need to leave your place feeling happy, and contented every time. All of your employees should love thier job... Great customer service starts with how well you treat your own employees... if they love thier Job, it'll show.
Ideas for what to do to attract attention? How about live music in the evenings for FREE! Find out who people are listening to... local bands... perhaps a few headliners a month... and just let people in... I mean, what's better than that! Or, have parties... host events. Put yourself on the map!!! Local people will always respect a local business and choose it over a franchise... unless they don't have any brains.
I dunno dude... Try your best... at the very least, you'll be able to say you did that.
