It's very easy to open a share dealing account with a trading house. There are usually limits on minimum transaction amounts (ie You have to buy / sell at least £100 at a time etc) but you can then buy shares in any public limited company (plc) listed on the stock exchange.
Be aware that the rate of return is rarely more than a few pennies a year from shares, so if you have a couple of hundred pounds invested, it's only going to get you about £5 a year tops. (You get more from a savings account)
