How can a non-profit organization get started? Also how can we get funded to open a no kill animal shelter?

Additional Details
I live in an area that only has one Animal Shelter and they euthanize the majority of the animals that are placed in it. I want to open a shelter that gives an animal a chance to find a for-ever home. I have worked in a shelter before and have other people wanting to start an organization but we dont know what the rules and laws are. We also dont know of any grants offered for no-kill shelters. I need real answers please.

I have found a website that compiles various resources on starting a non profit. I especially like the Minnesota Council of NonProfits because the site gives information on governance, developing strategic alliances, fund raising and other ingredients of successfully running a non profit.

http://www.lib.msu.edu/harris23/grants/znpbib.htm

As for funding your non profit, I suggest you check out Foundation Center to help you gain ideas on how to properly establish your organization and get support from private foundations. They have the most extensive database of private donors, and they publish a magazine that can be very helpful to your new non profit.

http://fdncenter.org/getstarted/tutorials/establish/index.html

I was previously involved in the setup of a non profit, and we were able to get a pro-bono lawyer who set up everything for us, including getting the 501c3 tax status. Contact other non profits in your area and check if there are lawyers willing to work for free to get you started.

Non profits are just like any business - you need to get the word out in order to get the needed funding to help support your activities. Here are some tips to help you market your non profit:

1. Determine your your target audiences: who are the groups and audiences that your non profit wants to reach. Remember that one target group may respond differently to a marketing message as another group so make sure that each strategy is tailor made for each audience.

2. Develop a communications strategy, creating timelines for marketing efforts such as newsletters, press releases, special events, and others.

3. Develop a visual image. Prepare your logo and other branding tools - and use them consistently across various mediums. Make sure that you repeat your branding messages, slogans in everything you make from brochures to newsletters.

4. Employ multiple communications tactics: Nonprofit organizations often target several audiences, which may respond to different approaches. Various communications campaigns can help establish and maintain a more widespread positive image.

5. Select and use appropriate media: Plan to use a combination of approaches best suited to reaching your targeted audiences and that make best use of your financial resources. Include a variety of methods including phone calls, letters, e-mail, newsletters, PSAs, press releases, and editorials.

For detailed information on how to start a non profit, I suggest you read the following books:

- Starting and Running a Nonprofit Organization -- by Joan M. Hummel
- Starting and Running a Non-Profit Made Easy by Entrepreneur Press, David H. Bangs
- Starting & Building A Nonprofit: A Practical Guide by Peri Pakroo

Have a legal draw up a grant,
this asks the government for money and most likely will get answered.
That's how most non-profit businesses get started anyways.
<3

For a no kill animal shelter I would think to ask PETA. Or some organization like that.
Start a fund raiser, get publicity by talking to local newspapers and people will contribute.

In your state there are supposed to be guidelines on setting up a non-profit business. You may try the IRS website for non-profit organiztion setups also. There are various things you need in place for your business to be registered as one. It's a time consuming process, so read through everything.

All the best.

1) With at least $100,000.00 USD
2) You need to fund the Organization with your own money.

You don't really think the Red Cross started with a Loan from J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. do you?

get lots of people that are willing to work for free for your cause, and span them around were you live to ask for donations.

Remeber though, you will always lose money at first. It will take a while to gain what you lost.

When you have a significant amount of money, go to the A.S.P.C.A and ask if they are willing to donate money or workers to build the animal shelter. You can also go to like home depot or lowes and ask if they'll donate lumber to build the place.

If you manage to get this far, send flyers out to a bunch of the local stores to ask people if they'll donate money, or there time to the animal shelter.

If yourself is the primary volunteer then you need to get at least two others volunteers behind you that are as committed as you are and ready to work. I would get in touch with other non-kill shelters and interview the heads. It is very important to learn from people that have already been in your situation. You need to do research to find in your area big donors to humanitarian causes - the local gas company, maybe even purina, science diet. Have several fundraisers that involve the community - but contact the media ahead of time so that you will have coverage. As people learn about your cause they will back you. Create a proposal with realistic expenses to be able to present this to your potential donors. Establish defined goals, have plenty of people to back you...and pray ;) Good Luck!

by somebody donating a lot of money

girljammer67
with alot of leg work finding people or company's willing to donate to the cause.
our local no kill animal shelter is funded by a thrift (resale) store of donated merchandise from the community. resold for the expense of caring for the animals. which is where i adopted my dog from. only requirements was he had to be neutered first, at my expense, before i could take him home.
good luck in getting started
