How can i find out if my electric meter is being read right?
I am telling you all my electric bill has been 140-180 a month for the last 4 months and it has never been that much, i swear i believe the man that checks it is lying about how much electric i use.
How would i know?

I agree that you should right down the meter reading yourself and compare it with your next bill.I believe your bill tells you the date of the last reading , that should give you an idea of when the meter was read. Is it possible you need a new meter? I also agree with the poster who said if you heat with hydro that wold account for the increase in your bill.I is possible the meter reader misread one reading but it is not probable he would do it 4 times in a row. There is no benefit for the reader to make your usage higher so I can't see it being intentional.I would check out if you can call in your own reads .

Find out what your reading date is and write down the numbers you see on your meter and then write them down again the day of the next reading. Call customer service to see if they have the same thing. I had to do that with my water bill once.

You need to learn how to read the meter, your power company will give you an instruction sheet. Write down the numbers and the date and that way you can compare them to the reading on your bill. Call your power company today and see if they have been doing estimate billings the last four month. The increase in bills is usually caused by something changing in your house. Your power company is the best source for help.

Take a picture of the meter on the reading day that way you have a date stamp on the picture and an actual picture to prove if the meter reader is reporting the right usage.
Check your usage. Don't run the heater/AC too much, turn off/unplug electronics when not using them. Anything plugged in uses energy even if it is turned off. You may want to get a voltage/usage reader to make sure your outlets and electronics are using and giving out the right voltage.

Call the electric company and complain.

Read the meter yourself, do the math.

If the meter is off, you have no way to tell, no way to prove it. You are at the mercy of the electric company.

Find out what day your meter is read and right it down and then right it down the next time and compare it to what the readings state on your bill or call the customer service if they are not printed on your bill. I don't know about your area but in ours there have been several major electric rate increases. So our bill has been quite a bit higher than last year. Hope this helps!!!

It isn't likely that the meter reader could be lying. All he does is write down the numbers that appear on the meter.

Do you have electric heat in your house? If so, those amounts are quite reasonable for the winter. If you don't have electric heat, then the things most likely to be running up your bill are your refrigerator and your dryer. If either of those major appliances are getting old, it might be cost-effective to think about replacing them.

Are you getting actual bills or estimated bills? Have you lived in this location for years or are you new there? If you're new, you may be getting estimated bills based on the previous owner's electricity consumption, and it will all average out when the meter is actually read again.

If you haven't changed your electricity consumption and you know this is unusually high for your house, then the only thing you can do is call the electric company and ask them about it. If you can convince them that the numbers are really too high, they might replace your meter, so at least your future readings will be more accurate.

I know my meter reader is not reading my meter because he would have to come to the front door to get someone to open the gate (hard to open) even if he could figure out how to open it there have never been any tracks and my dog hasn't gone ape shit over someone being in the yard. I have talked to the electric company and they say someone is definitely coming to read the meter.
