Invest in an energy efficient freezer, then buy food in bulk when on sale or in season and freeze it. Plant a little garden in the spring if you have the space. Keep the heater turned down and wear a sweater and socks if chilly in the house. Make eating at a restaurant a once a month treat. Make do with what you have, shop for clothes at the charity shops. Weatherise your home, caulk windows and doors, add insulation, etc to keep your energy bills down. Turn your water heater down a little, wash only full loads of clothes or dishes. Take showers instead of baths. Make lunches to take to work and school instead of buying every day.

Continue to "pay yourself" every month, through a savings account with a good rate. Even a little every month will add up. Only use credit cards if you will pay the balance every month, and if you do use them, try to only have one that you use for purchases. And make sure it has some kind of rewards, whether vacation, gas, cash back, theme parks or whatever. We have one that we put everything on, cable, internet, groceries, gas, clothing, then pay one bill every month. The rewards add up fast and we can use them for a vacation we otherwise wouldn't have had.

Spend less. Eat cheaper food. Don't go out for dinner as much. Don't crank up the heater or AC, just make it barely comfortable and live with it. Don't build up credit card debt.

Plan economical meals in advance.
Shop for everything you will need in the week.
Any spare money each week spend on stocking up a larder with tins and dried goods.
Budget for your bills, remember to drop the temperature of your Central Heating (or switch it off altogether).
Unplug everything not in use.
Make sure all the draughts in your home are dealt with.
Pay off as fast as you can any credit card debt/loans etc.

People keep saying we are going into a recession, we have actually been bobbing around in a recession for many months we are now going into a depression and that will prove to be truly bad.

Basically hints and tips will be pretty useless when we get to the point where there is nothing to budget with and nothing in the shops anyway.

If you have any debts try and really put some effort into clearing them as soon as possible (raise money by ebaying stuff etc).

Go to the library and get books out about cooking on a budget (the student cookbooks are always good) and thrifty living.

Keep your CV up to date. I know people who have been made redundant and needed to look for a job a.s.a.p. and they have suddenly realised that their CV is years out of date. Also take any opportunities to improve your skills. Go on any courses your workplace offers even if they are not that thrilling. Start looking at job adverts to see what skills employers are looking for as you may be job hunting in a more competitive market.

Personally i just study my budget and see what areas of my expenditure i can reduce. Sometimes you find some very easy savings by comparing various insurance policies and energy providers.

There are a load of different types of money saving tips here
