How do I find a 15 year old 401k from a company that has since been sold/merged wtih another company?

MY HUSBAND HAD A 401K/PROFIT SHARE WITH A COMPANY 15 YEARS AGO THAT SOLD OUT TO ANOTHER COMPANY THAT MERGED WITH ANOTHER AND THEN ANOTHER COMPANY. I'VE CONTACTED THE BANK THAT HANDLES THE (LAST) COMPANY, AFTER BEING TOLD THAT THE 401K SHOULD HAVE ROLLED OVER WITH THE CHANGE OF HANDS AND THEY HAVE NO INFORMATION ON SAID ACCOUNT. I'M CLUELESS AS TO WHERE OT TURN TO NEXT.
ANY IDEAS OUT THERE IN CYBER SPACE?
ALL HELP IS GREATLY APPRECAITED...

Wow, that's a tough situation... It is very possible that the 401k got lost in the shuffle, and sometimes in buy outs, they will get dropped or payed out at that time. Other wise I would advise you to get in touch with the current companies human resources department, if your husbands 401k exists, they should know either where it is or who to talk to in order to find out. It sounds like you're getting the run around. Your husband should have kept better track of his 401k/profit share. Sounds like you're going to need an attorney. I hope you have luck but it sounds like a dead end for you. You're going to have to keep after them. Just bug the hell out of them until they get sick and tired of you. Then maybe they will do something and find your husband records.

You'll need to contact the current company's HR department - whoever owns the company now. They should have access to records going all the way back.

Try the Department of Labor. They audit retirement plans and may have some information. If the company closed down the plan, they have to send any unclaimed funds to the State so you may want to check with them too.
