How do I get my 30 year old company to update some of its policies to conform to modern times?
My company was founded in the 70s, but some of their policies and standards are still from the 70s. What is the best approach to getting them to updating their policies?

One such issue is the filing system. They are not keen on electronic media storage. They want paper everything.

Depending on what's still oudated, you may want to contact the company's legal department as they have to adhere to new laws.

In terms of switching over to electronic systems, emphasize the benefit of using less paper and backing everything up on computer. There is also the expense of buying new computers.

Best advice: forget it. You're fighting an uphill battle, and change is extremely difficult for an organization that isn't motivated to move with the times.

Start by showing them something/anything that is illegal in their policies. Since the min wage is gowing uup to $7.15 an hr on Oct 2, it might be a good time for a review and rewrite.

Do not change everything in one go. It might be better to focus on one area at a time. Set yourself/staff a target like adhering to the change within 3 months or so.

My trading company was formed in 1980, and 6 years ago I had my filing system changed to minimise on storage of old documents, etc. It took me about 2 months to get that organised - with the help of an experience secretary who was given full authority to effect the change (but any change must be subjected to my own approval first).
