Maybe not calling them lazy idiots might work. Are you negative towards them or positive torward them??? How much do they make cuz if they are getting paid minimum wage, don't expect "professional" attitude. |

Who selected this team?
If it was you you are getting what you deserve.
If not you then request that you replace these non workers with people who value their jobs.
Have you tried setting up a productivity competition. Top prize a weekend in Paris with Uma Thurman.
Should work a treat. |

I've had to supervise a few rough crews of workers in the demolition field. I had to deal with laziness, drug use, violence and often being the only English speaking person on site and that's just for starts.
I found that often (though not always) respect and imposing real goals and responsibilities does wonders.
And yes if you make a promise you must keep it an if you make a threat you must ruthlessly follow it through -though never do it lightly |

we used to have contests, but this worked onlysometimes. i worked at blockbuster and everyone was lazy. we had to get a certain amount of online activations and rewards accounts per night. whoever had the most after 2 weeks got a free movie of their choice. sometimes if we were really behind, the manager would say, every online you get ill give you 10 bucks. i got 12 onlines, she went to the atm and gave me 120 bucks. beats the 8 50 an hour i was making. i think food is a good mood booster as well. also, i would work better because one manager would shut off the stupid trailer that would play over and over and we'd put in a movie (pg or less so its ok for kids too) and we'd have much more fun and customers enjoyed it as well. if fun things dont work, youll have to just start writing people up for not complying and get some energetic and happy people in there |

Well there is your problem right there....you already are calling them idiots and lazy....If you are not confident with the employee's from the start they will not be productive for you. If you feel that they are not able to handle the job or work load...then you will have to start looking at replacing them.
If this statement was not what you meant and are just feeling that they are lazy at this time, maybe you need to work on a new stradegy on giving them the work.
Think these questions through.
What is the true reason why the employees are not being productive? Do they have the opportunity to mess around and not keep them selves occupied with their daily work?
Sometimes just setting up a meeting with the team going over what a true days work load should look like will help them gear themselves towards improving what they are doing.
Also hunt down things that may take them away from doing work...do they play games or chat while they are suppose to work? Do they listen to music? Sometimes you need to be strict and take things away that they may enjoy to make them more productive. |

You would not believe the motivating power of free food. If productivity can be measured, offer a free lunch for the most productive employees. You might also offer it for each month for each employee who does not call in sick, arrive late or take off for any other reason (those with scheduled vacation just have to accept they won't get a free lunch that month). Ask the higher-ups to give you a budget for lunches once a month, then figure out a plan accordingly.
Be a good leader, don't be afraid to do their jobs. Be encouraging rather than negative. Try to be understanding about personal problems (although some people take advantage of this and seem to have drama after drama). It sounds like you've already done that though.
If they're that bad, then they need to know their jobs are in jeopardy and you can hire others to replace them. Ask your HR department to work on a discipline plan with you. (i,e, oral warning, then written warning, then suspension, then termination). If they are lazy and not meeting deadlines, there are plenty of others out there who will gladly take their jobs and they need to know that. |

Some times you can't do a thing but start over. But if you can't,,Is there a way to motivate them by giving them some kind of"PIECE of the PIE" An investment in there work,The reason there important to the business..Have a meeting of the minds.Find out why they work the way they do and how to improve things..When it gets down to it,You need them to do a JOB whatever it is and thats why they are there,,,If they can't do the job,you need to step in and solve the problem "Thats your job" If you don't do what it takes to make your business work the way it' has to, The business goes down hill, Do what you have to do to to make your business run as it should.
Just make shure your not the problem in some way..
To nice
Not enough "Boss employee communication..
Whatever it is solve the problem because your the boss..
OR Just put up with it and do nothing "That won't work"
The outer thing is "What kind of job are they doing and on what pay scale..
When you think about it, the success of any facet of your business can almost always be traced back to motivated employees. From productivity and profitability to recruiting and retention, hardworking and happy employees lead to triumph.
Unfortunately, motivating people is far from an exact science. There's no secret formula, no set calculation, no work sheet to fill out. In fact, motivation can be as individual as the employees who work for you. One employee may be motivated only by money. Another may appreciate personal recognition for a job well done. Still another may work harder if she has equity in the business.
But you can boil down employee motivation to one basic ideal -- finding out what your employees want and finding a way to give it to them or to enable them to earn it. Here we've gathered some of the best and most interesting motivational techniques used by successful entrepreneurs. We hope they'll motivate you, too.

Either begin to replace them, which might get the current employees motivated not to lose their jobs, or, consider making things more efficient around the office. Reduce pointless e-mail communications - most corporate cultures have way too much of this.
One idea you might find very successful, to try on a strictly TRIAL basis, is the idea of allowing employees to telecommute, perhaps once or twice a week, if your industry allows for them to work remotely from a home computer, and you have that authority. Effectively, tell them that this option is being tested, and those that can work at higher productivity levels can continue to have the option, and the others will, of course, need closer supervision in the office. I tried that once, and it increased output from my team by over 10 times - even though they probably worked fewer hours. They were happier and more was getting done. |

Maybe you need to re-examine your assessment first. If no amount of incentive works then you as a responsible leader/supervisor must be doing something wrong. Probably they need some self-esteem and calling them idiots wont help. It is demotivating. They need consistant motivation, because as soon as you call one an idiot they all realize you are nothing but an overbearing supervisor. First they want some respect and then they want encouraging and then when you prove your ability to them they will respond to motivation. |

If their lazy and idiots to you then you may be the problem. An establishment is only as good as its management dear. Some people will drive you crazy , but all?
Give them some incentives and praise for job well done or effort on solving problem. If you have a reward system, people will rise to the occasion. Everyone likes to feel good about themselves.
I owned hair salons and don't know what type of business your speaking about ;but I've learned to develope people first then product. |

I always work more productively for a supervisor that I like and trust. If my supervisor called me a lazy idiot, (which I am sure that you don't call them that) I would be less likely to go above and beyond for them. However, if I like my supervisor and consider them my friend, I am going to do what I can to help them out in any way possible. Sure I can stay later, come in earlier, do a little more to help you out. |

Your praise isn't honest, and they know it. That's why it isn't effective. Tie their monetary reimbursement directly to the amount of work they do....commission. Make them part of the profits instead of part of the expenses. No more salary, no more hourly wage. Every employee just gets an honest percentage of his increase. |

I believe that if you work in a place where the boss or supervisor or manager is very highly motivated, determined, and is approachable, the business functions better, whereas the employees are motivated and determined, too. |

You should get them motivated somehow, be friends with them and try to let them know that they need to get working or else they won't make good money lol Just don't badger them or yell like that cause that will piss them off and they'll keep being lazy. People listen to me and get working if I tell them how i'm feeling about the situation. plus listening to their point of views (problems) helps them too because they won't be thinking so much about their problems and concerns, and will be motivated to do the work that they're suppose to do.
Hope this helps and makes sense! lol |
