I personally do not feel sorry for these people who have taken advantage of us. They need competition. We need other forms of energy to compete with them. Solar, nuclear, natural gas. Maybe we are ...
Why does it not constitute a monopoly when there is only ONE cable television company in any given region? How come this has been allowed to go on? Why, in an era of lawsuit happy america has no one stepped up to these guys?
When I asked a cableman the same question he said that the main reason is that it's expensive to run cable lines and counties pay the cable company to establish them there and there is some type of a contract involved binding the county to the cable company. Plus, there is always Dish Network and such. But yes... it is pretty ridiculas.

thats why i have the satelite because our local cable company doesn't have the upn channel, which airs wwe smackdown, so we called around to the cable company that was 10 miles away, still the same county, and they told me that since we had a cable company in our area, we would have to have service with our local provider. so from that moment on, i decided to switch to satelite. plus, with the cable, every year, the prices went up $5....i've had my satelite for 4 yrs now, and i couldn't be any happier with dishnetwork!!!

Because Americans are soft and will keep getting **** on by big business and politicians we elect (bush). Go to dish network, I only pay $63 a month for 150 channels + local. cable cost me over $100 with 4 tv's.

How do you know anyone else even wants to offer cable in that area? They have to contract the deal with your local town hall. There are usually many small companies that offer cable services in an area too, but they don't have million dollar advertising so you don't know they exist. You can get Dish too, right? The better question is asking how do utility companies that offer electricity and s*it get away with it. You can live without cable, but gas and electric? You can, but not really.
