Advertisements - the more hits - the more they can charge.
Just like TV, the more people watching a program - the more the Networks can charge! |

The ads they have at their sites and sites which are connected to them. They get a small amount every time someone clicks on them, whether they buy anything or not. |

The same way that newspapers have traditionally made money - through the sale of advertisements.
But wait, their pages don't look like they're totally covered in ads, so how can they ever get enough advertisers to cover their costs? Volume volume volume.
As of April 2006, Google was serving 3.6 billion search result pages per month. To put that in perspective, the Earth's population is around 5 billion people. Imagine how much money a newspaper could make if over 1/2 of the world's population were subscribers.
Of course, Google has some other streams of revenue but the bulk of their cash flow is from their advertisers. Ask.com, I'm not so sure about.
If you're really curious, you can check the companies' SEC filings to see exactly where their cash comes from. I've linked the Google investor relations page in the sources list, and to Yahoo!'s listing of SEC filings for IACI, the parent company of Ask.com. |

If you really are curious there is a great book called "The Search" by John Battelle. It explains the whole history and economy of the search industry. Very interesting.
Basically they sell ads that pop up when you get your search results. |

When you search something on google or ask.com, you'll always see some kind of advertisement on the side of the page. Different companies pay google or ask.com to post their advertisement on their site. Google gets the most money since it's the most popular. meaning that more people will see the advertisement posted. |
