Ask at you bank branch - they are legally bound to advise you of the ombudsman's details. However, the ombudman themselves may refuse to handle your case if you have not been through the proper channels. Check with your bank how to make a complaint, if you haven't already.

Hi, you must follow your banks complaints procedure and give them a chance to resolve you complaint themselves before the Financial Ombudsman will help you.

You should in the first instance visit your branch or better still put your complaint in writing to your branch manager. They should follow the steps below. (Normal Banking Practice)

Their aim is to resolve your complaint straightaway.
If they haven't resolved your complaint within one week, they will write to you:
1) To explain why they haven't managed to resolve your complaint
2) Tell you how long they expect to take to resolve it
3) Tell you who is dealing with your complaint
In most cases, they will resolve your complaint within two weeks.

If they haven't resolved it within two weeks, they will contact you (normally by phone) to update you.

They will keep you informed on a regular basis until your complaint has been resolved.
In exceptional circumstances, where your complaint is particularly complex, matters may take longer to resolve.

If this is the case, your complaint may be passed to their Customer Relations Unit/Complaints Department who will continue to try to resolve it.

In the unlikely event that they can't reach an agreement with you by the end of eight weeks, they will send you a 'Final Response' letter, which will explain their final position, or, a letter giving reasons for the delay in resolving your complaint and an indication of when we expect to reach a conclusion.

They will at that point tell you about the Financial Ombudsman Service and how to contact them about this complaint.

you can lodge a complaint online with the Financial Services Authority, which regulates all banks. Follow the link below, they take a while to respond (a few weeks) but respond they do, which bank was it, just out of curiosity? i had immense problems with the HSBC, ruthless bastards they are, i thought Natwest was useless until i met them, they got nice rates does the HSBC but when i quit teaching and as a result went through hard times, they were ruthless, a standard charge for a missing payment incurs no less than a whopping £30, nice eh?

noodle
best to write to them and keep copies as you have a record of everything then.

The thing about ombudsman is that you cannot actually speak to them. Then. The bank will be reluctant....but in this wonderful world of technology, you have to get your quill out and write in blood. Then, if you are lucky, they may reply, with, not an opology, but an explanation of why you are misinterpreting things. Then, when you ring a premium rate number at your expense, you can talk to Barbies daughter. She, is your only link, so be nice, but remember, there are no ways into this. You have to be clever. Banks own the world. you are nothing. So, when you get to Barbie. Be as asslicking as possible, she will be thick so she will not notice the irony. Then. You may, get a letter from the ombudsman, inviting you to ha ha write a fllllllllg letter, explaining everything all over again, by which time you get so fed up. which the whole system is designed to make you. It is over. You as the bleeding yanks say....move on. get another bank, I hate banks worked in them many years ago. Buildings Societies, try the Nationwide no trouble there.
