How do i stand on not being flexible at work?
The company i work for has downsized the work shift patterns. I have choisen one which i am now working. The company though wishes us to be flexible by one hour either side of our shift, which i am unable to do because of child care and also being a single parent find it hard to jugle. One hour is a lot to me, but not to the company. I have to go against a panel of 3 people manager, personel and union rep, although am not in union. Just dont know where i stand now.

Is there anyone who supports your stance and is prepared to go into the meeting with you.
Tell the panel(don't ask-tell them)that you want that person in the meeting with you. The supporter does not have to say anything. It is imperative to have someone by your side and you are entitled to it by law.(In fact if your company doesn't offer you the oppertunity of representation they are in fact breaking the law themselves). Remember no confrontation without representation. Whatever you do, don't lose your temper or use bad language.Listen to what they have to say then tell them that it is not possible for you to conform and therefore you wont be going along with there request. If they persist tell them you have nothing further to say and leave the ball in their court.

All you need to do is to tell them what you have already said,
I have found a link that might help you even more,
all you have to do is click on the link and it will take you to the
Direct Gov website about employment and your rights.
What flexible working pattern suits your needs

F**k the private sector - get a job in the civil service or public sector/local authority - they are so family friendly.

Meanwhile speak to the citizens advice bureau or call Unison. they might be able to help you even if you are not a trade union member. Good Luck.

Sounds like a difficult one . Is there no way at all you could offer a compromise ?? One which obviously doesn't affect how you relate to family issues , so at least you can Say that although you have issues in terms of family commitments you are willing to move a bit .
This would also look better in your favour if you eventually have to go to tribunal .

Hi!

If you are working a shift THEY have asked you to work already, they can't now turn round and make you work another shift.

YOU can approach THEM to make an application for flexible working, and they HAVE to take your request seriously.

YOU do NOT have to legally consider or accept a different shift pattern to that which you are now working.
If they sack you for NOT be flexible, you can take them to a tribunal for unfair dismissal - AND YOU WILL WIN.

Stick to your guns, have all the relevant information ready, about your situation and the children, and let them think you have done your best to accommodate them (even though you have absolutely no obligation to) - don't let them bully you.

The Union Rep should be there to help you, so let them do some of the talking for you.

Don't say too much and only answer the question they ask - don't proffer any information they have not asked for.

Hope this helps!!

Best of luck!!
