How do "for-profit"businesses measure success?

The Good Humor Man
Dollars and cents is their bottom line. Pure power politics fueled by monetary success. The success of sales, longevity of business, satisfaction of their stock holder's, their ability to sway the market in their direction and fold their competitor's businesses or buy them out, having their business saturate the media to improve their success and again, making the big bucks. After all, they are a "for profit" business. It is their success that is most important to them. Yes, pleasing the public is important too, but they don't share their profits with the public either.

superscribe
They use one form or another of what is called the Balanced Scorecard, which measures performance/success in the following categories:

1. Employee growth and innovation (HR, training)
2. Internal processes (efficiency) in creating and refining products/services (middle to executive managers, staff)
3. Customer satisfaction (sales, marketing, customer service personnel)
4. Financial performance (chief financial officer, accountants, controllers)

Many different ways, depending on if the business is a service business, retail, Law Firm, etc. Most important for ALL is Net income. Simply put, how much the income exceeds the bills.

You first have to know what your expectations are (and please be realistic) and the limitations of the business are. For example, if you own a little mom and pop ice cream shop you probably won't be able to turn the same profit that a huge "Dairy Queen" or "Baskin Robins" will produce. It's also going to depend on what you consider success. The easiest indicator for most of course is profits, but not necessarily the most satisfying. I've had the pleasure of working at and owning small independently run businesses. In both cases, it was nice to make money, but it was even nicer to employ workers, provide healthcare insurance benefits, etc.. to people that I knew in my community. Success in any endeavor can be measured in several ways, just always be honest with your expectations and understand your limitations.

monkey
By metrics such as return on equity (ROE), return on assets (ROA), etc.
