How do the trolleys stick to the escalator in Asda supermarkets?
My mates reckon its magnets, but i think thats ridiculous.

black_eyed_dee
MAGNETS???

you guys are on CRACK!!!

yeah, look at the wheels, they are made of thin disks which fall into the grooves of the escalator (and of the security leaving the car park bit) hence the trolley sits on the axles and isn't wheel powered until it gets back to flat ground.

the grooves in the trolley wheels slide over grooves in the escalator providing a safe journey to upper floors.

magnets- your friend is no fool when it comes to the high tech features of ASDA...what a man!

stickyricky
It's the grooves in the trolley that stick into the grooves in the escalator. Just like stickle bricks (remember them).
Or if you stick two brushes together.

When you get to the end they are prised off.

Boris
Magnets in the wheels of the trolley and the underside of the escalator.

Magnets have opposite poles so attract. When you get the the end, the cap of the top is chiseled so the trolley can separate from the runners.

The wheels on the trolleys ride on the outside edges. When they go onto the escalator the outside edges go into the gaps causing the wheels to sit onto the high part of the track. This prevents the wheel from tuning till it reaches the level ground again.Hope this is of some help.
