How do you feel about Wal-Mart closing over 4000 stores in the us? is it because of the econmy? why do u think?
When I first heard the news here on the east coast, I at first doubted my ears but then after hearing it again from the news I know it had to be true.

With walmart closing so many stores do you think this will be good or bad for the econmy?

I can actual see it being good because then it would allow people to open up ma and pa type shops again.

Of course that's just my opinion. How do the rest of you feel wal marts closure will effect the economy?

Keep dreaming, but we all one day hope for Wal-Mart's demise.

The first problem is that Wal-Mart doesn't have 4,000 stores in the US. As of January 1 2008 there were 3,550 Wal-Mart Discount Stores, Supercenters, and Neighborhood Markets in the US. (They also had 591 Sam's Club stores in the US, but since you specifically mention Wal-Mart I am not counting them.)

According to the economists Wal-Mart is bad for other retailers, but is good for their customers because of their low prices. By the way Ma and Pa shops that concentrate on offering what Wal-Mart can't -- niche marketing, better service, higher end products, etc. can be very successful in spite of being near a Wal-Mart.

Hope this helps

There aren't even 4000 total Wal-Mart stores in the entire US -- and there's nothing in any online news source to indicate that more than a couple of them have recently announced that they're closing. I think you've got your facts seriously wrong.

(As of January 2008 there are 971 Wal-Mart Discount Stores, 2447 Wal-Mart SuperCenters, and 132 Wal-Mart Neighborhood Markets in the entire country.)

keep in mind that walmart isnt ruining the economy if anything its helping it....consumers ruin the economy...if people dont buy, guess what the economy goes down,oh and please dont mention walmart and china...are you aware that almost ALL companies are producing their products in china or overseas?...why is that ?because it cost too much in the united states to make products...americans are buying less and less american products...walmart always tries new and trendy things for its customers(second link),and has never made an apology that it puts its customers first and why should it...guess who paying the associates paychecks?its not walmart..its the customers...and as a consumer..how many of your products have bought that were american made the past year at any company? sounds like you are supporting the very cause you complaining about..how convient...i dont always buy american either, but the third link will get you started, consumer start buying 100 % american, walmart will notice the trend as they always do ,and start doing the same...its always starts with the consumer....dont whine do something about it

Wal Mart hurt the economy by running out other jobs in town, and providing employees with no other choice but low pay and no benefits.

In the long run, the economy would be much better without Walmart type stores. Walmart purchased almost all of their products from China, therefore no money has been going back into the US to support our own economy. This country has just plain run out of money (cash).

But, I haven't heard of Walmart closing anything.
