How do you feel about the outgoing chairman of ExxonMobil being given a retirement package of $400 million?
In case you've not already heard about this latest corporate atrocity, here's the story. Last year, ExxonMobil corporation made the largest profit of any company EVER ($36 billion) and now they're giving their retiring chairmen a package worth $400 million. Americans are paying the most we've ever had to pay for gasoline ($3 per gallon, average). What the hell is going on in this country? Does this not trouble you at all? Is this the best capitalism can do? Good grief...

My husband and I were talking about this ealier in the week, and we are both completely appalled that this guy is going to get a retirement package like this!! It sickens me that we live in a country that would allow something like this to happen!! Me, as an average american, continues to watch the gas prices soar, and I can do nothing about it. In the meantime, someone like this is sitting back smiling and ecstatically happy in his retirement!! How do people like this sleep at night??? It never ceases to amaze me, how the rich only get richer, and the average joe can only sit and watch it happen. It's sooo time for Bush to get out of office, and for things to change!

There was a paradigm shift in business about 10 years ago.

Business chagned from moral and ethical to greedy and thoughtless regarding their employees and consumers.

Look at Enron, the telephone companies, or any big business.

Many companies took the focus off of quality and wanted to pump out cheap quantity and have out sourced jobs to other companies with bad economies.

Mom
Yes ,it bothers me greatly ,so what are we going to do about it?

merlin_steele
I agree; the system is not perfect, and that sucks.

While it's a relatively myopic point of view, it's the general thought that Exxon makes too much money. I'm too lazy to go explain the whole thing for the nth time. But basically Exxon has had steady 10% margins. They deal in volume. So, if they ran at zero profit, gas prices would go down 5-10% and that's it, not the dollars that people expect from "price gouging." So, yeah, they could cut a few more cents off the price, but not that much more.

The 400M that you are talking about consists mostly of stock options that he got a while back and vested after a number of years. People can argue all day whether executives in general make too much. The Google executives made 10 billion over the last few years. Other tech companies made billions also, which is much more than this person. Buffett's made 40 billion and so on and so forth. The difference is that he's in an industry that people look at more closely because it's oil. No one can visualize Google's revenues.

Anyway, to put it slightly in perspective, 400M off their 370B in sales is .1%. That's 3/10th of a cent at the pump if he had donated it all back to the consumer.

Yes, you can still argue that he was overpaid, but his pay is just a drop in the bucket at a company that big.

I'm OK with the chairman being given a retirement package of $400 million. He probably worked really hard to get where he is at and fought hard to make that much profit for his company. """"But I have a really big problem with how he/she accomplished this task. forgetting the oath of making good honest business deals and not using dishonest business practices in advertising, gouging prices based on false expenditures and organizational refitting in order the lower the cost of fuel by updating company equipment. yes the supply and demand fits the Mobil company to a T. they have something that everyone who has a vehicle needs to operate and lets face it you need a vehicle in most cities to travel to work since most cities do not have a source of transportation (free) to get you their. So in a sense the pricing is out of our control because it we stopped driving our vehicle to boycott to mobile comp. wouldn't allot of people use another source of transportation in which we still pay for in around about way in some kind of charge for the service. So since we are indirectly and directly paying at the pump so to speaker I believe we the people need the government intervention to give relief at the pump but their again its hasn't been we the people for so long but only I the government. So my best guess is to try to smile when you bend over while at the pumps.
