How do you feel about this?
I am righting an ethics paper about how people feel about working at a job and all of a sudden when some one quits or retires everyone else becomes responsible for performing the extra duties without even given a choice or given any type of compensation. How do you feel about that? Has it happened to you and if so explain how it happened and how you were given the additional duties? Did the additional duties enrich your job and increase your loyalty to the company? Were you compensated in any way? Do you think the company is looking out for your best interest or their own?
Additional Details
I meant writing. Sorry I was rushing.

Be carefull when you use the word ENRICH, it has a specific technical meaning in HR. Enrich will mean that you were doing tasks OF A HIGHER LEVEL. If you just did more work, but at the same level, then it is called ENLARGING.

The general principle is that companies are not liable to pay you for job enlargement, but must do so for job enrichment. The AMOUNT of work you do whould not affect pay levels, u nless you have been employed specifically to be paid on the basis of output.

Having to take on another person's responsibilities when they leave, whether they quit, they are fired, or simply move on, is the "nature of the beast" when working for any company, big or small. I don't feel bad about taking on extra responsibilities one way or another. Generally, the additional duties did not "enrich" my job either monetarily or intellectually. Companies always look out for their own interests, not yours.

Something similar happened to me. It wasn't because someone quit or retired .. it was because someone had a baby .. (like that wasn't known in advance) ..

She had her baby and I wasn't asked to take over her duties, I was told to do it, not really knowing everything she was responsible for. We found out (our boss and I) that she didn't do everything she was suppose to do and got all the records in proper order while she was gone. When she came back, I was asked to take her position, but didnt want it and was almost forced to take it.

When I told them I would quit, they allowed me to keep my position, but take over some of her duties (ones she never did anyway). She wasn't happy and blamed me for most everything that happened, even for finding out she didn't do her job correct (I didn't even know her job duties going in)

The company did increase my pay, caused problems in the family life because of the added hours and of course the company was looking out for their interest, that is business.

GL on your paper!

It has been proved that American employees actually only work about five and a half productive hours during the seven and a half to eight hour work day. Companies know this and when business is stable and you lose an employee it it normal for them to spread the work around and try and get more for what they are already paying for. Yes, the company is looking out for its best interest because they are seeking to maximize income, especially if a publicly traded stock held company. Yes, you will probably enrich your job and increase your own work ethic and loyalty to the company. You initially may say "boy this job is much harder than it use to be", but at least you have the job and now the opportunity to show what you can really do. The people up the line that are responsible for the hiring and firing, will take notice, as they be testing you to see if you are really dedicated. Once they know that you are a company loyal person and hard worker, and seeking advancement it will come. Rome was not built in a day and neither are careers. Give it your best, which you should have been doing anyway, but when not given a chance all people tend to do only what they have to do, and usually this is the way they live their entire live's. I hope that this helped you.

it is happening to me right now,,, one of my colleague was transferred to production and so the management gave his purchasing task to me. the main reason of transfer is that of the usual "cost-cutting" measures of the company. At first i'm excited coz it's gonna be a new activity for me but as time goes by, i can feel the pressure and bulk of the work. The additional duties indeed is enriching though i haven't recieve any bonus or extra allowance for it. but i think when this becomes tiring for me, i have the right to demand nor quit from it.

Unfortunately, in today's world, this is considered to be the norm. It has happened to me and I just accepted the extra duties. I only work 8 hours a day and I try to prioritize my work so that it appears that I've completed several tasks. Actually, sometimes I get really upset because my manager questioned me and the person I work with about why we didn't complete a task. Well, she has worked in the same capacity and she knows the answer; too much work for the current staff. I've also planned some ways to get more completed, first by doing all of the easy work first. Second, I email my customers, therefore the phone calls and voice mails are down and sometimes we actually can get a lot done. Anyway, I'm past the point where I dwell on this subject because the company does compensate us by giving us free product, free tickets to sports events and employee recognition(star award) which includes a designated parking space in front of the building.
