How do you feel when corporations layoff large amounts of people but the corporate CEO, CFO get huge payouts?
this debate can go in circles. i believe that executives should be compensated on profitability and governed by an effective board of directors.
if the company is losing money and is forced to layoff workers, executive compensation should be hurt as well. if the company is profitable, everyone gets to keep their jobs and executives will make larger amounts of money.
the key is to have the board of directors very active in the decisions of the executive team. a good internal audit committee will also be necessary.

Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose? Aren't companies trying to save moeny when the do large layoffs? I don't think it's fair.
