How do you find out what a past employer says about you?
I was a contractor for a company in a local large business. My contract ended years ago........but, I did have a problem with a supervisor in the department I worked in.....she was reprimanded for her differences with me and other employees that she had problems with but, since then, I have not been able to get another job with that or any other contracting company...or even the company I was contracted out to. Is there a way to find out why I was, maybe, "flagged"? and/or find out what kind of reference they are giving me?

I would call your previous contracted company and act like a potential employer wanting to discuss your past performance. I know it's dirty, but to get the work done ...

You might want to have someone else call for you with you on a second line. I just came up with the idea by the way, I have never had to do this. If i were though, I'd make sure to say I was from a legitimate company just to make sure they give you all the information you need to know what their perception is of you.

I personally would ask someone she is working with now. People gossip and if she is the type you say she will brag about getting you flagged and tell someone or gossip about it. Be smart though, dont get yourself in trouble, if she really has flagged you it will be hard to fix.

By law there is really very little they can say about you. I used to list co-workers as my supervisor to give good references.

More than likely your problems are due to the bad job market.

i dont know if you can to be honest as far as im aware companies are not allowed to say anything negative about you or to give you a negative reference but you cant control or prove what may be said over the phone it may be worthwhile contacting the human resources manager where you used to work and any others that you have applied to to see if they can tell you anything

I'm not sure if it varies from state to state on what previous employers can say about you, but where I live, previous employers will only tell prospective employers your dates of employment. If they give them any information that might result in the prospective employer not hiring you, it would be very easy for the applicant to sue their previous employer. Just for that reason, employers will not divulge any other information about past employees. I really like the first poster's suggestion. If you really want to know the truth, I think that would be the only way to find out for sure.
