How do you go about changing managements mind and get us off of a 12hour shift?
There are times when a 12 hour shift is beneficial, I'm a nurse and work three 12 hour days a week. Personally I love it because I work all three days in a row and then have 4 days to myself.
The benefit of the 12 hour shift in nursing is to be able to provide continuity of care to the patient, in the long run the patient gets better care.
You also didn't say whether or not you took the job knowing that the shift you'd be working would be a 12 hour one.
So in all honesty, without all the facts, you can't be given a good answer. However if you did know that you'd be working a 12 hour shift, you should have never taken the job to begin with.
In a nutshell, to get off your 12 hour shift, find a different job.

If you are on 12 hour shifts then obviously you are having order fullfillment issues. That means that you have more orders for your product than you can produce in an 8 hour shift. There are ony 2 solutions to that problem. Turn down orders and lose money as well as customers or bring on a 3rd shift. The only issue with a 3rd shift is the training and overhead involved. If management is sure the volume of orders will stay at this high level they will eventually choose option 2. If they are not sure they will continue the 12 hour shifts for the interum and reevaluate the situation in the future. They do not want to pay you overtime. It raises their cost of producing your product above what is used when calculating selling price. But if that is what they have to do on an interum basis that is what they will do. As far as option 1 no businessman in his right mind would ever choose #1.

You might try explaining that after 8 hours or so people begin to tire and are more likely to make mistakes or sustain injuries. I know I can be pretty sharp for 8 hours but after that my brain starts to go numb and it's more difficult to perform at peak efficiency. The 12 hour work shift is rediculous.
