How do you reprimand an employee for missing work? Read details please.?
There is an elderly employee I supervise that I must reprimand because he is always missing work. He is much older than I am and has a degree from Purdue. I'm not sure how to even start the meeting. Additional Details It's not necessarily that this guy having a degree that is confusing me. It's that his missing work is for medical reasons: but the corporation I work for has a no fault policy meaning that especially because he is in his first 90 days of employment he cannot miss work.
Depends on what type of job you are in and what the cicumstances are. Is it for medical reasons that he is missing or because he just doesn't want to work? You have to be careful if its medical because he can claim FMLA and he can take the time. But if its because he just doesn't want to work excessive absenteeism can be grounds for dismissal. Tell him that his missing affects work and let him know that it will be reviewed in a month. Have him sign acknowledging that he understands. But first off make sure you give him the opportunity to let you know whats going on to make sure its not medical.

Cut back his hours to 3/4 time or 1/2 time, and tell him he's missing too much work, that's why he's getting cut back. Be firm.

have a copy your company policy available to employees.

Document all occurrences. It will make your case stronger.
Look at employee handbook. Typical scenario is verbal warning, then written warning then termination. BUT you need to know exact numbers for each step in the process.

Yeah you definitely have to confront him about it, no matter if he is older and his degree is "better". I would just be very straight up with him and tell him that he is not being a responsible employee by missing work. He shouldn't think that he has the right to expect to do what he wants, when he wants. Ask him why he is doing what he is doing and maybe he will tell you. If he has a valid excuse, warn him and remind him that you are his boss and you wont put up with that kind of behavior at your company. It really does depend on his situation but if it was a valid excuse wouldn't he have mentioned why he is missing so much work already?

Just cause he's older and has a better degree means nothing, He's your employee and you just gotta confront him. You can't let him be any different from the others.
