Go to the Insert drop-down menu and click on Symbol. This will bring up a little box that has two tabs--Symbols and Special Characters. You can access the trademark symbol on either of these, but you might find it more quickly on Special Characters. Also you can take advantage of the AutoCorrect option on the Tools menu--mine already has an AutoCorrect setting to replace (tm) with the trademark symbol. You can add other AutoCorrect items, as well.

At the end of the word, click Insert, then click Symbol. You'll see the symbol in the table.

You can also just type (TM) directly after the word. The same works for copyright (R). For Example:
a company might have a TradeName(TM)
a company might also have a copyright on a Titlecopy(R)
If this isn't working, then you need to adjust the settings on Word. I have the default settings - for both Office XP and Office 2000. I think it is called "Autoformat" or something.
