Min-Ta-Li-ill | How does Fedex or UPS ensure next day delivery to almost anywhere from anywhere and still turn a profit? |
I mean literally how do all these packages get from so many Point A's to so many Point B's? Additional Details Specifically, do higher volume routes finance lower volume routes? why not only do higher volume routes then? |

the answer to your question lies in managerial sciences. It involves hub and spoke system analysis. And Fed and ups are not the only ones to use this system it actually evolved from the legacy airlines. the way it works is that all the shipment from around the country literally go through Menphis, Tennessee. (i think could be wrong about the actual city.) at that point they are redirected to the location neccasary. That at least is the basic analasys. this is how the company started they may now have more hubs than just one. it actually is i am sure much more complicated but what occurs is that the capacity utilization is put to a maximum. this also allows for relatively little variance in the actual expenses because the routes are continually used. and allows for a virtually fixed cost and discounts from the airports due to consistentcy. the answer truly lies in the break even analsys and then pushing to get more volume due to the accuracy allowed from the system. so basically, the company will find the break even point (most likely hedging the gasoline prices as well which is good for accuracy in predictions) and then price accordingly. i dont know if fedex does this but this why the airlines offer discounts to certain cities because they already know their breakeven analasys and are trying to grab as much capacity as possible. to accually do calculations on this would take a very long time involving gas prices. airplane type to calculate fuel effiecency, average maintance costs and expected runway rental fees. what i have presented here is merely an overview and a very vague one at best. but really it involves accuaracy in expenses. |

They ship things by airplanes and I believe that they are regularly scheduled to fly everwhere so whether you have a package or not they're transporation is going there anyways, and that's how they save the money, the continued and repeated travel to places. |
