They must be doing something right as they are doing very well.
As with selling any product they decided on their target market and focused on making their product attractive to them. They are heavily focused on customer service. They focus on making a friendly welcoming atmosphere and depend on return and loyal customers. For example, the store my daughter works at has a comfortable lounge sitting area with a corner table set up with laptop hook ups and wireless service and an attractive outside patio. Customers are addressed by name and engaged in friendly conversation. Her particular store is very popular with the local business employees, the city police, and the local CHP.
Happy employees make for good customer service. An employee at Starbuck can get full health benefits with just putting in 20 hr/week. They are very supportive of students and will work around school schedules and have a program of financial aide for schooling available to those who have worked with them for over a year and have worked minimum 20hr/wk. Employees, also, get shares into the company.
In a day and age where good customer service in retail is the exception rather than the rule, makes them even more attractive.

They make a lot of it from me! WooHoo! I have always loved flavored tea and flavored coffee. They have the coffee and it is so good I haven't looked to see if they have the tea. (Besides the basic Grey, Green, etc) Talking about like apple cinnamon.
