I am a busy man,
I Want to get my shopping chores done as quick as possible
I will go to one place that has everything before I will run around to 4 different stores to get it all
but mostly
its the prices that would make me go to walmart before a mom and pop store
cause the smaller stores cost more
less volume means things have to cost more to make a profit to live
that being said,
it wouldn't be wal-mart in spefic
but any big box store in general

I'd go to k-mart, target, meijer, or any other name to get it all in one place and cheaper |

It is the pricing. It is a matter of purchasing power. Walmart can approach a supplier and buy 1,000,000 units of a product, where by a mom and pop shop may buy 50. Naturally when buying 100 units, you can better negotiate a purchasing Price.
Likewise wal-mart is the largest customer fo many corporation. If your largest customer is demanding a lower or special price, you make it happen. In order to make up or to compensate for this reduced price you increase the price on smaller orders to maintain their margins.
People go to walmart for the value. I assure you there is no level of service, apathetic employees who are either not adequately trained or willing to learn about the products in their department. There is no level of service.
If I am paying the same price for an item at a place where somebody can walk through the prop and cons. A place where somebody can help me select the best product for my needs, or in a place where inventory isn't a nightmare. (wamart almost always looks terrible) I am going to go there. Actually I will go there int he first place, a few dollars isn't worth the frustration of the walmart. |

Actually, the low prices really are the cause. The reason Wal-Mart has such low prices is because they are able to purchase huge amounts of goods and receive large discounts. Smaller businesses aren't able to do this, so they are forced to keep their prices higher. Most people would rather pay less for what they are buying, so they buy their goods at Wal-Mart. Because of this, the smaller businesses lose customers, and eventually, they will go out of business. If the small stores had lower or equivalent prices, people would not necessarily still shop at Wal-Mart. Why would you go to a store that mistreats, underpays, and takes advantage of their employees, and has poor customer service if you can get the same or better quality items for the same price at a smaller store? |

Walmart causes a blight in any neighborhood because all the small businesses that compete with it get driven out by walmart's cut-rate prices. But it's not just that - those small business folks eat lunch, get their laundry done, bank, rent videos, visit doctors and dentists right near their businesses.. so when the first tier of businesses dry up, it hurts all the other ones!!!!
It is a vicious cycle .. the walmart store usually schmoozes the city into paying no municipal taxes for a certain amount of time as they are supposedly "helping the community economically", then they disappear before the lease is up, when everything has gone to s--t. |
