As long as you enjoy what you do and your passionate about it then it's not hard at all. If you come in to work and drive to be the best and work hard all 8 hours of the day then it is easy. I am 23 and I have had a great corporate job for 2 years. I love it and the skill part is not the hardest. As long as you avoid getting involved in the politics, focus on your achievements and not others, and come in to work on time everyday then the skill, promotions, etc fall in to place. You just have to make sure that is a career path you think you can enjoy and if so then it should be easy to be driven.

In my experience the only people that fail in corporate America are those who can't take constructive criticism, come in late all the time, call in sick, and thinks that they know better then everyone else. Also a lot of people get immersed in corporate politics and it usually comes back to bite them.

Look at the size of the corporation. If you work for a small company and come up with what you think is a great idea, chances are, if you can explain to your manager how this will save the company money, he'll probably tell you to try it and see what happpens.
If you work for a very large corporation, your boss will have to run it by his boss, and on up the line and, they'll probably tell you " we've always done it this way"

I worked for 4 years for a Fortune 500 company, and I felt like I was in jail. Since then, I have worked for smaller, family run companies, ( corporations) and felt I had more than enough freedom to do my job the way I felt it should be done, and had a great feeling that I was actually accomplishing something.

This picture suggests a bunch of corporate clones playing the role of "yes" men, rather than trying to actually get some work done.

Unless you become more watchful in your States and check this spirit of monopoly and thirst for exclusive privileges, you will in the end find that the most important powers of Government have been given or bartered away, and the control of your dearest interests have been passed into the hands of these corporations. -- Andrew Jackson, farewell address, 04 March 1837

To have to be self motivated and enthusiasm helps. In the 1980s due to layoffs of a lot of middle managers in the USA the MBA, Master of Business Administration, was considered useless but it is good to have. Being creative is also a must to go up the hierarchy. Being able to relocate helps a lot since some require mobility and this also help in being promoted. You can also work long hours and sometimes the culture does not appear as they claim it to be.

One culture that has changed along with many others is Wal-Mart and the unions. The dream and vision of Sam, Jim, and Sam's wife Helen have been squashed by the blind ambition of Sam's oldest son who continue to say what they used to do.

Now what the corporations avoid

In business world there are no loyalties to include any nation except to net profit.

The financial markets of the world love profit and see wage increases as a negative.

A lot of corporations and businesses from small to multi-national conglomerates are not allowing people to retire and do their best to lower pay-roll.

Many companies have fired their employees and offered the same job but at a lower pay. Some do harassment and intimidation since they are protecting their image of not laying off people. Also many are hiring more part-time than full-time since it takes longer to get benefits that are lousy.

A retired US marine Major Gerneral Smedley Darlington Butler explains it best regarding the corporations and life.
