flames1134 | How is Wal-Mart bad for the economy? |
I heard on here that it hurts the economy. |

It undercuts prices, that way everybody shops there. I mean why would you spend more at another store, when you can get the same thing at WalMart.
Here's the problem. WalMart's force the little guys out of business this way. America was built by the little man, but is being overtaken by big corporations.
I will not shop at Walmart. I'd rather spend a little bit more, and go to a store where the help is pleasant and the store is clean!!! |

Walmart kills small business. By undercutting the competitor they are technically putting the little man out of business. Which would you buy??? A $100 TV or a $200 TV same model etc.. Same in every department in the store. Thankfully, they have tacky clothes and knock off electronics. That is the only way that other business's can compete, by having better brands.
Also, Walmart does not promote women into upper management with 1/10 the speed that it promotes men.
Then on the LEGAL front... They do not do deep enough background checks and hire quite a few illegal aliens for their cleaning crews etc... thus taking jobs away from AMERICANS.. |

At this point in history it is the single largest private employer in the United States. So, it sort of IS the economy.
What's bad is when it's having a flat year, like this one, it adds to a flat economy. When it has a booming year, on the other hand, it adds to a good outlook for the whole economy. |

Well it's pretty complicated...Wal-mart is detrimental to small business because they work on volume and as such can sell things for a discount. A greater discount than any other small business (and even large businesses) can afford to and still make a profit. Therefore the margins at Wal-mart do not need to be fat, they can sell things closer to wholesale than anyone else and still be extremely profitable. That is bad for the economy is couple different ways, the first is that it creates a kind of local monopoly so the area is putting all it's eggs in one basket and if for some reason Wal-mart pulls out of the area the local economy will be devastated. Local economies are just microcosms of the country's economy to a degree so you can extrapolate that effect out to a national level. Secondly, a free market economy is what drives this country and if people start to dissent from that idea chaos can ensue. Wal-mart makes people angry in that sense. |

They are in business to MAKE money like the rest of the Business World.
They operate the same as others.
In the 1980s K-Mart was hated because they were #1 and lost it.
Many businesses from small to large are mainly interested in making money.
Circuit City fired people that were earning $15 per hour and invited to come back at $10 per hour.
Gibson Performance,Inc in Corona California fired some employee that were earning over $16 per hour and invited to come back at $9 per hour.
Target has a Loss Prevention officer that has been with them over 20 years and was earning around $17 per hour and was given a chance to return at $11 per hour which he did. Also Target will be ELIMINATING their in-house security guards to an outside company to lower expenses.
Target,K-Mart, Sears, Kroger, Safeway, and many others are JUST as horrible as Wal-Mart.
If
Wal-Mart's Chairman of the Board of Directors,
Samuel Robson Walton,
is NOT afraid can DISPROVE how HIS subordinates and the FBI(Call 1-310-477-6565)
harassed
Max Rafael Waller
(formerly of Sam's Club 6625 in San Fernando California 91340),
who WROTE THE TRUTH about Wal-Mart and Sam's Club,
then

It's not. You hear a lot of bad reasoning and bad economic thinking on the topic of Walmart sometimes.
sivdog21's answer is a great example of this (no offense, sivdog21). He points out that Walmart is "detrimental to small business" -- although it's only detrimental to direct local competitors. That is not any proof that it's detrimental to the economy as a whole -- in fact, it's not. There is no free market without competition, and in any competition there will be specific winners and losers -- but the people at large, and the economy as a whole, are winners. For one thing, all consumers profit from the continuous download pressure that Walmart's competition puts on prices. (Even if they don't shop at Walmart.)
He goes on to say "Secondly, a free market economy is what drives this country and if people start to dissent from that idea chaos can ensue." Perfectly correct -- except why blame Walmart for the 'dissent'? It's really middle-class liberals and union members who have driven the whole anti-Walmart diatribes of recent years. And they're certainly not supporters of the free market. |

Any business that makes profit on a free market is good for economy. |
