WalMart makes a profit on volume, not margin.
That's the two ways to make profit. Either you sell a little of something and make a large margin on each one, or you sell a lot of something and make a small margin on all of them.
Both ways are equally valid, it just depends on the way that your particular business/products move.
Look at it this way: Three dimes are better than one quarter!
So, they will make up, and surpass, in volume sales (by all the people rushing to take advantage of the low prescription prices) what they used to make in margin on lower sales.
(Not to mention the extra money they make from the additional products that you will buy from them while you're there at full price!!!) |

Because the company is trying to make inroads into the prescription medicine business. And they are hoping that while you are in there getting your $4 prescription filled, you will do other shopping and buy other stuff. They are willing to take the loss on that $4 prescription if they can make it up in profits from other items you may purchase at the same time. |

They tell the generic manufacturer they won't stock their product unless they can charge $4. Wal-mart calls the shots with it's vendors and no company is going to say no to them (Rubbermaid did a few years back and walmart stopped stocking their products. Rubbermaid is now bankrupt and Sterlite is all you'll find on their shelves)
Even if the generic companies lower their price to $4, the volume will offset the lower price. Making $4 on one million prescription fills at walmart is better than making $25 on 150,000 fills at Target, CVS, Eckard, Walgreens, etc. People are flocking to Wal-Mart to fill their generic prescriptions, so the generic companies are making their money. |

How long do you spend in Wal-Mart waiting for your prescriptions? How much money do you spend? I can assure you, they are not losing any money. Most prescriptions take a minimum of 20 minutes to fill. Yes they charge you $4. They make much more on what you will spend and what your insurance will pay also. |

Even though a lot of prescriptions cost a lot of money, most cost very little to make. Therefore Wal-Mart pharmacy can purchase the generic drugs for next to nothing. They still make a profit fairly equal to what they would for name brand stuff. For example: lets say Wal-Mart buys a box of Gen. Tylonol for $1 and sells it for $2, they buy Name brand for $2 and sell it for $4. They will always make a profit. |

Hi, its called a loss leader, i'm in UK but understand that Wal-mart is a supermarket that sells food mainly? It's like putting a box of cereal on offer for 50 cents, yes they will make a loss on the cereal but they will make money on what else you will go in to buy ie your weekly shop. Its all about getting you into the store, once there you'll get your cereal but be tempted to buy other items from them. Hope that makes sense! x |
