Yes it is nice and wonderful to experience & enjoy superior technology thru google, yahoo & msn. Yes I certainly enjoy the emails, blogs, chats..VOIP.. but just couldn't understand till date why on earth are these people offering these facilities free.. I have heard many many times .... "There are no free lunches"... .Is it really such a self-sacrificing...self-enlightening movement from these guys to provide "free-stuffs..to the world..or if there is something cooking behind in their R & D labs .."...Btw .. i understand i am using yahoo answers to ask the world this question....

Most services provided on the web are able to continue to operate by earning revenue through advertisements elsewhere on their website. So you're right, there is no such thing as a free lunch. Advertisers are paying big bucks to be seen on sites that you frequently look at in the hopes that you will see their ad and in turn in turn buy their product or service.
Trust me, yahoo, google etc, aren't providing you email for their person fulfillment. |

They get huge revenue shares for advertising.
Google has their AdSense program which actually scans your e-mails and brings advertisements up next to them that it deems appropriate.
Yahoo, too, uses advertising to support its e-mail service.
The "no free lunch" here is probably the privacy that you lose while Yahoo and Google learn all about you through the search terms you use and the ads you click on.
(P.S. I pay for Yahoo mail plus so I can avoid the ads!) |

I think the companies would lose huge, significant numbers of users if email became a paid service.
The companies make money with all those advertisements you see when you check your mail. |

if they did decide to include a fee then it would devastate the number of people who went on. They get all their money from ads so thats how they run it. |

I think they might realize that they might not have as many users if they started a fee. I know I certainly don't have the money to pay if they started charging for every thing. |
