How long does it usually take to prepare an offer?

I had an interview with a company last Tuesday. It went very well and the hiring manager told me that he was going to make me an offer. I actually used to work for that company and I had very good relationship with everyone. The hiring manager followed up with me after couple of days and he said that he was working with HR on the offer. I has been a week since I heard from him and I still don't have the offer. How long does it take to prepare an offer? should I follow up with him again?

This depends on the size of the company and how many sign offs he needs to get. I know when I hire someone, I need to get HR's signature, the directors signature and sign them up for training before an offer is made. Also, we perform a drug screen and a background and reference check, so we need these back before an actual offer is made. This can sometimes take a week or two depending on schedules and if anyone is on vacation or out of the office. With smaller companies the process is usually streamlined. A good rule of thumb is to wait a week from the last point of contact, so if the hiring manager followed up with you on Thursday(?), then I would wait until then to call the company yourself and follow-up. Anything sooner would appear too desperate vs. interested.

Be aggressive and persistent without being a pest. FOR SURE, call the hiring manager. I've hired/fired many people in my years of managment/ownership and always wanted go getters!

It varies from company to company. It took my company almost 3 weeks to send me the offer, however, they kept in touch with me via e-mail/phone during the process. You may want to touch base to see if it went out. Sometimes companies change their mind and don't let the prospective employee know. If you leave a message and your call is not returned, perhaps you should keep your options open.

First of all, Congratulations Sara! I would say since the manager is keeping in contact with you don't sweat it. If you have not called him since he told you that he was going to make you offer and all the contact has been solely made by him/company. I would give it until Monday before you call. All companies are different with their offers for employment. Some will call you and send you a letter. Others will make it official in writing only. You want to show interest but give them a little more time. Did he by chance give you his email address? You can always keep in touch that way.
