How many agree that Walmart will lose financially by getting rid of the Layaway Department?
Especially this Christmas. I know alot of people have their reasons for hating layaway, but it gave people with a smaller income a way to have a nice Christmas without breaking the bank. Additional Details They got rid of Layaway last year after christmas. Funny though, all of the walmarts around here still have fabric.
Well, I cannot imagine Wal-Mart going under from this bad decision. However, I do think it will hurt them and I think it serves them right. I understand that it really was a hassle. I understand that it took up a lot of space. At the same time there was still the 10% down payment they were keeping for all of those people that simply forgot to come back and pick up their stuff or cancel their order.
The one in this town used to have people come in and put stuff on lay away then right before the thirty days were up they would come in and cancel it just to get their money back. Have you ever heard of using the lay away department for a bank? A bit odd but it happened a lot apparently.
Nonetheless, we are all broke just paying for fuel to get from point A to point B. I know Christmas will be hard on my family this year without the option of putting things on layaway. Especially considering it is a small town and the only option anyone really has is to shop at Wal-Mart.
I guess they are also doing away with their fabric department after the first of the year. *Sigh*

walmart is anything but stupid. by cutting layaway they will also cut manpower operating the layaway. also they will cut a significant shrinkage problem in inventory this in itself is out ways the income alone. overall they will make money, by not loosing anymore of it in layaway
^patty^
If people would plan ahead and start a xmas account after xmas each year you would not need layaway and would have a nicer xmas without having to worry about how to pay for it.have never used layaway and dont plan on starting now.

The effect on gross sales is probably negligible and likely more than made up for in reduced costs.

I hadn't heard this one, yet. They lost most of my business when they cut back then got rid of their fabric.
