How much do CEO's make?

Somewhere between
"lots" and "A huge F-ing hell of a lot"

Some CEO's make upwards of $20 million per year. Others may only make a few hundred thousand per year. But even $300,000 per year is "lots"

There is no set figure. Each salary is negotiated between the board of directors and the candidate himself. Suffice it to say that the number is not small because the expectations and responsibilities are high.

Salary is generally on par with performance and is also significantly affected by the size of the company. The CEO of a venture capital funded start-up would make substantially less than that of a mid-size company. 250K is on the very low end for the smallest of companies that are of any legitimate size. There is of course, the possibility for someone who has a few thousand dollars to file for S or C corp status and make themselves the CEO of the company if they wished to pursue it as a personal business. In that case, they really have no lower bound on salary. That 250K mark is for companies with some level of pre-existing tangible hold on even just a small portion of the market share for their industry.

What is more common is for CEO's to be compensated in the several hundred thousand dollar range, say 500K, but receive bonuses and other forms of compensation like stock options as the majority of their income so that they are on more of a pay for performance type salary. These additional forms of compensation are usually worth more than their payroll salaries. The average is usually 2-3 times if I had to take a guess.

For large businesses and other market leaders, salaries are in the millions (5-10 million lets say) and their bonuses are generally staggering, 20 million or more. For the biggest of the big like financial powerhouses, bonuses can be in the 50 million dollar range. This is not going to be likely given the current market and economic conditions obviously, but that was "normal" for the past decade or so.

Alternatively you could just as easily be the CEO of a financial leader, run it into the ground over a period of several years, and collect a nice package of 100 million or more like a certain someone did last year at a certain financial firm who just happened to be bought out recently.

The Cheese has spoken.

Cheers.

The measure that I've generally heard is that the CEO (of a publicly traded company) makes 100 times what the lowest paid worker within the company makes. So if the lowest paid employee made $8.00 an hour, the CEO might make $800 an hour ($1.6 million per year).

That doesn't apply always but it's a good average

CEOs make varied amounts that are sometimes fixed, and sometimes variable. You will find some CEOs that technically are on the books for $1 per year; however, they are often handsomely compensated through stock options or actual stock. So while their salary may be small, total compensation may in fact be quite large. On the other hand, there are those who make significantly more in salary, upwards of $20 million, and still receive stock options and other forms of compensation. The pay really is quite variable, from company to company, but it can be assumed that large corporations will have CEOs make 7 and 8 figure salaries.
