In Washington it is $3.40 a gallon of regular right now... how much of that is tax... how much of that is operating expense for the oil companies and how much is profit?

The oil refiners get about $0.05/gallon.
The station operators get about $0.10-$0.15/gallon.
The government (fed+state) averages about $0.46/gallon.

Guess we know who's really greedy.

Keep in mind
You have the:
lease to get the rights to the oil
Drilling, including drilling dry holes
Oil well supply
pipeline
Transportation
refiner
retailer
Every one of these has to make money or you do not get the oil.
Government takes over half and they do not do anything to produce oil or gas.
The retailer makes about a penny and has to fill out massive forms with huge fines if he makes a mistake
The refiner makes so little that nobody will build one.
pipelines make money. Drillers often don't.
I get $20,000 for 1/4 acre and 1/16 override on lease.
The figure you want to look at for oil companies is the return on capital. Sure the figures for a large company are large, but if ROE is low, you do not get gas. And they are among the lowest in industry.
