How much would a recording artist recieve? as royalties?
for example chamillionaire he sold around 2 million worldwide and he signed his label to universal so how much would he get on average ? 3 dollars? 4 5 dollars a cd? keep in mind he signed his label to universal so he said on his website that he gets twice as much as artists who are signed to major record labels
Additional Details
ok heres the thing chamillionaire said that under his contract if he went gold he would make the same amount of money as an artist who had gone platinum na d if he went platinum he would make twice as much as a regular artist going 2 times platinum so im guessing he get paid 5 to 6 dollars a cd and pays universal a percentage of that because he has a distribution deal with them hes not signed as an artist.

Here's an article about CD royalties that should give you an idea.

I suspect it would be much lower, probably around $1 to $2 per CD, if that much. As mentioned above, most musicians make more touring (and thereby merchandise such as T-shirts, posters, etc) than from CD sales.

It's much like an author who would be lucky to get $1 per book sale (usually it's around $0.65 per book unless you're Steven King who probably gets $1 or so). Generally royalty contracts are seriously in favor of the company publishing the book or producing the record.

It all depends on his specific contract, there is no industry set prices for royalties.

Many times the profit they are talking about includes not only cd sales, but merchandise, concert revenue, and even commercial deals....(Like Shakira and Pepsi)

Hope this helps!

How much of an advance did he get?

Usually you get pennies per CD on the first few albums you make ( if you contract is for one or two) but then you renegotiate if the first albums were successful.

Be careful of the big advances! The production costs of the albums come out of it, and some contracts you have to record in studios owned by the company with their producers at crazy amounts of money per hour! Then you have to pay the advance ( more like loan!) back with interest , from album sales. What happens if the company doesn't decide to promote it, and/or get you on a major tour? You still have to pay it back!!
Alot of great bands have been screwed by the record companies. Notice most "stars" have other family in the business. It is because they have someone to watch out for them, and pull the right strings. It's not about talent anymore. This "AMERICAN IDOL" thing is perfect for the record companies. They own the artists, have their writers come up with the songs, and their studio musician make the music. And they have total control of the promotion machine.

I say " PIRATE MUSIC OFF INTERNET" the quicker these companies go under, the quicker we get our music back. And make your music D.I.Y. - sell it at your shows, you don't need a label that will take all the enjoyment out of it for you.
