Well men's suits can be expensive. The first part is: how much money are you going to be making at this job? If it's a lot (over $50,000), and you already are employed, you should spend at least a few hundred ($400).
Now, you might get one on sale so count the original price.
If you're fresh out of school, all you have to worry about it is if it fits and if it looks good. They know you're pretty much broke.
Bring a stylish friend with you to try it on. They will look over it to see if the fabric bunches (too tight, poor fit) or if it folds and drapes (too loose). The sleeves should come an inch back from your wrist when you have your hand in the handshake position. If the sleeves are too long, take it to a tailor and they will take up the sleeves for about $15. If the jacket is new, the sleeves should be all the way let out (that means long). If the sleeves are too short, do not buy it. The same goes for pants.
If it's not a really high paying job, you can get away with spending less on a suit. Try Sears.. their suits are very inexpensive and last a long time.
You can spend less on the tie and shirt, unless you'll be taking the jacket off, which you won't in an interview, usually. Shirts can be anywhere from $30 to $100 and up. Go for the $30-$50 range if you can. If it's an interview don't choose anything too flashy. Dress shirts for men are measured by the neck size in inches. Ties are relatively cheap. Around $20. Choose a tie that is complementary to your suit and shirt. No orange tie with a blue suit.
I'm a woman who doesn't often wear a suit, but I did manage to snag a $300 suit for $80 at Macy's, and it looks really good. Try the department stores if you want to find a less expensive suit. I've gone through this with a few boyfriends, so good luck! |

For a man's suit, a nice suit at a decent price is usually about $200.00. The shirt, tie and belt can be purchased at a discount store such as Marshalls without cheapening the suits looks. Good mens shoes are usually around $100.00. Do not buy a cheap suit or shoes. If your body doesnt change too much a good suit will last you at least 5 years, so it is worth the money. |
