The first thing I did this morning, to find answers to this question, was google nuke bomb building...and surely that is what every U.S-hating Al-qaida wannabe will be doing as well - "If some crazy 5'3'' dictator of an impoverished sanction-bound nation can build one, so can I!" Surely this is the beginning of real proliferation - a bomb fest for terrorists. |

You express a real concern. The UN lacks the will and the clout to monitor and control the trade of fissile materials. Their needs to be a joint alliance of the BIG nations, like Russia, China, and the U.S. to prevent nuclear proliferation. Sadly, too many people get rich and politically powerful through trading in WMD's and their components.
In recent history, it seems we've given up on the goal of preventing nuclear weapon proliferation and instead just try to keep them out of the hands of war-like leaders. This technique appears doomed.
Pakistan and India both have nuclear weapons and threaten each other with them in conflicts over a worthless, mountainous piece of land called Kashmir. I don't know how to explain Kim Jong Il either, except as simply a megalomaniac.
The U.S. may have to occasionally act alone diplomatically to control the international trade of fissile materials. Once enough Plutonium, or uranium is purified, the technology of building an atomic bomb is far too simple. Getting the material is the hard part. |

It started with a desire for nuclear energy; sounds peacful enough. Next thing you know, they're making a bomb to defend themselve from a US invasion. As if they have one single thing any American would want.
Now Iran wants a peaceful reactor; what a bunch of BS.
Nuclear reactors are a boondoggle; long term money losers, producers of unstorable nuclear waste and best possible source of terror materials. A Pandora's box without the "Hope" in the end. |

If you have the cash and enough slave labor, just about anything is possible. The hardest thing about building a bomb is knowing that it can be done and the various theories behind it. Well, once the first bomb was dropped the cat was out of the bag, and everyone knew it was possible. |

Any high school physics book will give you the information you need. The problem isn't building the bomb, it is obtaining the materials. If you have a supply of U-238 uranium, it is relatively (albeit highly inefficient) easy to extract the U-235. And once you have the materials, it doesn't necessarily mean you have a highly efficient bomb. But you would have one capable of causing major problems. |
