How should a young person in a demanding senior role command respect & b taken seriously at work?
(the company is a large firm, departmentalized, many rebelious individuals, ppl forming cliques, many things r needed to b coordinated, etc... I feel like ppl hav it easy with me, all they need to do is come n talk down to me I shiver n giv them stuff easily also... they come n hover around in my cabin for their stuff such that I give in too fast. My boss had told me to be tough! But, would that create hidden enemies. I would like to know how to get ppl to do their jobs n the work given without shrugging me off n without bullying me bcuz I am young). Pls. give me good advice, no notes on why n how I might not deserve my current job- I have worked hard for it n been interviewed cuz I had the work experience, nobody got me in thru reference).

First, yes, toughen up. They won't respect you if you don't. Who's the boss? Are they? No, YOU'RE the boss. (reminds me of the movie Josie & the Pussycats - "Who's a rock star?" lol) If you stand up to them; showing CONFIDENCE, discipline, sefl-esteem, respect and unwavering consistency with a calm (again, confident, even if you don't feel it) attitude and look them in the eye when they speak to you, things will change. Ignore the bullies and give them more work. Ignoring lets them know that their constant bullying isn't tolerated and they were just doing it to get a rise out of you. You may need to take them into a private area and advise that their behavior is unnacceptable and you will not tolerate it. Remember, confidence, calmness and the ability to look someone in the eye without flinching (while keeping calm, cool and your voice low) shows them you mean business. They'll come to respect you for it. If they don't (met some like that) well, you can't win them all but at least they'll know where you stand.
It's like you're standing up straight, looking them in the eye, not answering to their harassing, answering with short answers, not showing how their bullying upsets you, confronting them and not backing down to their attitudes, showing who's boss while remaining confident, assertive, calm and cool.
I have been using this method for years at my job and it's worked wonderfully. I hire, fire, discipline and recruit.

Take care, ok? It'll get better

well they can smell a weak link and you seem to be it, regardless of your skills, to be quite honest if your work level is done in the same manner as the question was posed then I would find it very hard to take you seriously, you sound like a 15 year old with all the text speak, conduct your self as a grown up and people will treat you as one.........its not like you was promoted from within [i think] but you was chosen to do the job, now show them you can.

what your boss told you is correct. you have to be tough. if you're going to get respect from the people that work under you, you have to demand it. you can eliminate the possibility of creating enemies by being fair. its a balance that could be precarious at first.. but i think that you can handle it if you set your mind to it!

stop using your age as an excuse for not talking up for yourself! stop being a doormat! take control and stop being afraid of what others think about you. do the job that you were given! tell yourself that just because you are young that doesn't give anyone the right to disrespect you!

First, envision the word "no" floating between you and the person asking you for favors.
Second, always, always remember that you work for the company, not those seeking favors from you. Your ultimate responsibility is for the profitability of the company. You are there to make profits for the company -- other things are incidental and relevant only if they add to the bottom line.
Third, if you want to be taken seriously, learn to write in English. You text messaging style is a turn off to those reviewing you work. Being young is no excuse. Lose the teenybopper persona and learn to communicate like an adult.

There is a lot of difference between being tough and being assertive and it sounds like you need to be the latter. Being assertive is not about bullying back or having to turn into someone you're not comfortable with. It is about thinking about exactly what you need and what you are entitled to expect.

Fabulous book by Anne Dickson called Women at Work: Strategies for Survival and Success is a great help in thinking about this. You can find it at google books.

It's all about character and not at all about age.

Remember, people want to be well led. They want a leader who is fair and who is firm, who sets realistic goals and keeps people to them and who kicks weak performers off the team. If you pander, they won't like you or love you and worst of all they won't respect you.

So, define clearly and in quantifiable terms what each person's goals are. Measure the results and communicate and discuss them. Let your weakest performers go. And stop taking cr*p from your people.
