That really depends on the job but my tips are:
1) Don't finish your work too fast as that only brings tighter deadlines, (use the time to check it)
2) Be realistic when say how long something is going to take you
3) Spend more time on work that is going to a higher level than your line manager
4) Volunteer for high visibility work even if it outside your remit
5) Make sure you are heard by those higher up (act as a mediator or mentor)
6) Go to high-level meetings with a view to express your opinion, make sure you have reasons not just views
7) Make yourself approachable to all, (with more companies using 360 reviews this is vital)
8) Don't try to be somebody else, you get found out and they lose respect for you
If you want more thought let me know, these are some of the things I practice at work.
Good luck |

My company wants us to be both. The smart employee is safety aware concerning rushing, frustration, fatique and complacency. The hard working employee gets the numbers(production) out that the boss needs. |

Study your company in which you are working. Take notes on what you are going to do on the following day. Be innovative in your daily work. Be charismatic in your co worker. Be friendly and be nice. But you can't avoid the hardship's sometimes in your work. |

They come hand in hand. First you work your *** off, then as people notice that you are a out going hard working person then you will be promoted through the system. |

Look for ways to streamline your working practices. They are several ways based on good old "time and motion" practices which I am sure you can find examples of on the internet.
Don't fall into the trap of ever thinking that what you are proposing (should you suggest changes), hasn't been considered by management and don't get despondent if your suggestions aren't met with a raise and promotion.
Good luck. |

You can be both. Most of the time, a hard working employee is a smart employee. Hard working doesn't have to mean overly stressed. |

Only work when someone is looking
Work on your skills of 'looking busy'
Take longish bathroom breaks where you just stare at yourself in the mirror
Never work through lunch, nap in the car instead |
