"Bottom line" driven individuals are usually compelled to solve the more immediate needs of the business, often forgetting strategic long term goals. It is surely not easy to deal with this kind of person but I believe the key is to present the facts regarding how saving one buck today in a strategic investment (labeled as expense by this kind of character) can result in loosing a million a few years from now.
In other words, do not fail to observe the horizon by looking to closely the spot you are standing on. |

First of all: do not let this individual be intimidating. (or at least don't let him know he is). That is where he has his power and ability to control everyone.
Someday, he will realize how horrible he has been. He probably does not have a true friend in the world. His business friends are only there to hob-knob. And his family, they are probably either exactly like him and don't care about him, or they are not approving of his ways and will probably not be there the day he comes off of the business high horse and need them.
This person cannot live this way forever. |

This guy sounds like he has no life outside of the office. Maybe you could help him get one - invite him out, get to know him - maybe there's a reason why he's so focused (like he's trying to forget something or get away from something - or maybe he just has no friends or social skills whatsoever.) A good, healthy relationship with a girlfriend might also help him to use his emotions. |
