I am a girl and there is a male colleague doing similar job as me in the office. He regards me as his competitor and always tries to find a way to make me look bad in front of our boss. For example he will send emails from a customer stating there are mistakes of the reports I have done which the customer spotted from our company website. When I explain it was not wrong he then argue it was! My boss got a bit annoyed and does not want us to compete and I think he was nasty ( as he did not send the first email from the customer to me , just sent it to the boss who then forwarded it to me!) - How could I deal with him?
1. Be the best. I don't mean compete with him. Look for ways to be more efficient. Do the job correctly the first time. Keep a positive, team attitude. Everyone notices this kind of performance.
2. Do not be pulled into his competitive games. When you are accused of doing it incorrectly, check to make sure you did it right then stand by it. Do not argue or bicker. If your boss wants something corrected he will speak to you. Arguing with your co-worker only pulls you to his level.
3. Document any cases of his attempts to smear your name or performance. Given enough rope, he may hang himself.
If you take the high road, I believe you will be vindicated in the long run. If your employer does not wait for that to happen then they lose and you may have a case for legal action (see point 3). Good luck with a difficult situation.

if it was me, i would send him a email explaining that we all make mistakes and if he has a issue he needs to bring it to your attention before going higher up and save the email somewhere safe. if it continues you should write another email explaining that maybe he didnt understand your previous request and to please bring any mistakes to your attention before going to the higher ups and copy it to your boss and save that email. if that doesnt work then have a face to face meeting with him and your boss where you can confront him and he can not lie. once you do that you can explain to the boss that you feel he is using you to try to get ahead since he cant seem to do it without putting someone elses work down and you request to the boss in front of him during the meeting that he needs to stop. once that is done then write the boss a email reitterating what was said in the office and how the situation will be resolved and copy that to your co-worker and save that email. if it continues then do the same going up the chain of command until you either get satisfaction or find a job where the boss can keep control over the employees
