How to handle when your boss is taking credit for your work?
I submitted a report which discusses my department's productivity to my boss. Well, weeks later I still havent heard anything from her, so I emailed her asking what she thinks about it. The other day I heard one of the executives talking about the exact productivity changes and I have a feeling that my boss submitted it and is taking cvredit for it. How do I handle this?

Good bosses advertise the good work and ideas of their staff. Insecure or inexperienced bosses may submit the work of their staff without properly attributing the staff. In fairness, you don't know if your boss attributed the ideas to you or not. Ask your boss how that report on productivity went.

You don't say where you work, but In some industries it is common for the group manager to forward individual ideas as "group effort", then privately promote the more creative and productive individuals. Learn the culture of your group and style of your boss before taking action.

Could you start a conversation with one of the execs about the changes? Then drop in 'i did a report about that not so long ago!'

Or, request a proper meeting with your boss about the report. Say you'd like feedback on your work and you could even ask for a colleague to sit in because they're interested in productivity too. Then you have a witness!

Confront her and let her know you heard other executives talking about your report... You' d like to know the status.

Or

Email her and cc the executives that you overheard talking about your suggestions - in your email ask her if there is a status on the suggestions you made on the productivity changes...

Good Luck.

First, you have to be absolutely certain that your boss has committed this selfish action.
When you are positive, confront her!
Did you keep a copy for yourself?
That will help prove it.
Then, if she doesn't give you the credit, demand a hefty raise!

Even if this blows up in your face, at least you know you were good enough!

Good luck, sweetie!

Total morons! With nothing 2 do.

Do you have a copy of it? Do you still have the email that you sent showing it was you who had the idea. If you know for sure that she did and you can prove it was you then go a step higher than her and show that she is an idiot taking credit for other people's stuff. She can get in some big trouble with that especially if you can prove it.

Hillary's right, for the most part, you dont' have intellectual rights when you work as an 'at-will' employee.

and its alway expected that your boss will take your good ideas and run with them.

you have some choices:

1. you can be passive agressive and "deny" your intellect to your boss or even pass along usless or misleading ideas and information
2. actively agressive and confront them about "stealing" your ideas.
3. be professional. You are an "Idea -Gerbil" its your job to come up with labor, time and cost saving ideas

You can always ask: How did the xyz presentation go? did they like THE idea of ABC? not mentioning who's idea it was.

Unless this idea was trully original, I wouldn't sweat it.

work more on your career and less on who gets what credit.

you'll advance much quicker that way.

Not Guilty!
Find a new job. This has happened to me and that's what I did. Best move I ever made. I was promoted within 2 years and doubled my salary. I worked with the other company for 5 years without recognition.

That happens a lot with people , there is not really anything you can do about it .

Hopefully, you have dated records in your computer....this would hopefully superceed her submission....Seems like this is immoral.....Can you talk with an executive about it....making sure you have the dated proof.....including the emails later to the "boss" taking credit for your work.
I would suggest you also keep a diary of sorts dated and updated regularly. Sometimes, the only way to get recognized is to toot your own horn......I would clear this up tho....as she apparently isn't doing her job....so takes your work as hers....How many other people in the office is she doing this with........humm Could be time to blow the whistle....watch your back.

hilarys_skillery
This is quite common. Most employees realize that making their bosses look good makes them an asset to their boss. People who do this are more likely to get raises and promotions and such. But isn't it a stupid system?

You should have a sit-down talk with your supervisor (I dislike the term 'boss') and discuss it. Explain that even though they are your supervisor, you should have received credit for the work. Explain what you overhead. Be very courteous and not accusatory or confrontational)

(No doubt if this is how your 'boss' conducts business, I'd wager to say that this particular person cheated in school to get ahead as well, but I digress..)

Be prepared to find another job. As a matter of fact, you might have something lined up before you discuss this with your supervisor). Also, the next time you are asked to prepare a repot, in addition to submitting it to your 'boss', also submit a copy to their supervisor as well (at the same time), so there is NO misunderstanding as to who did the work.
