I just started out as the new manager in a department, one of the employees want's to leave the company because she is loyal to the previous manager. I don't want to loose the employee. What can I do to motivate her? |

I doubt that's the reason she wants to leave. I've seen manager's come and go and I've never bailed. Perhaps she fears change and is concerned her job will get harder or you'll haver her doing something different. |

many studies have been done to find out what makes an employee work efficiently
let me discuss few of them
1.Physiological needs
this includes salary high enough to meet basic requirements.
2.safety/security needs
this could include job security,protection against danger and fair treatment
3.social needs
friendship,a sense of belonging.Work colleagues that support you at work
4.esteem needs
having status and recognition,sense of achievement and independence
and last but not the least
5.self actualization
being promoted and given more responsibility
if you feel that you have provided your employee with the above mentioned needs then u can think about the next important factor.
Job satisfaction can be either provided by monetary factors such as stated above or through non monetary awards
such as:
-allowance for the employee's children's fees
-heath care
-company vehicle
-free accommodation
-free trips abroad/holidays
If you really wish to keep your employee from going then you need to work hard to provide her a good working condition,pleasant environment or you could offer a good salary along with a bonus or a performance related pay
you could even make her job more interesting by Job rotation or encouraging her to work hard to achieve good promotion opportunities

you should show her that you appreciate her job and befriend her.
anyway, i dont think your employee will leave her job just to be loyal to the prev manager...its not a good time to be changing jobs.
im sure she willl learn to like you, you coming here asking that, it seems you are a very good and caring manager.
