there is no way to stop layoffs in this economy, at least in my business, air cargo.
people don't buy as much, they don't ship as much.
they don't ship as much, i have less revenue and aircraft are expensive to operate....and qualified and screened people are expensive to pay for.
the only way is to cut hours. payroll is the single largest expense we have to deal with.
i initially started by cutting all employees to a 4 day week but costs were still too high and ended up laying off 20% of my workforce. the remainder are on a 4 day reduced hours schedule and in the end i saved the most jobs i could while still providing on-time service to our customers.
additionally, i cut my salary enough to keep an additional hourly person on staff
if you're out of business there is NO chance for a recovery so you do what you have to do to live on and fight another day.
