I've been undercharged by PowerGen for 2.5 years & now I've been sent a massive bill. Can anyone help please?!
I've apparently been undercharged by PowerGen for the last two and a half years - now I've been sent a massive electricity bill. I've been told that I am liable to pay even 'though my meter has been read by their engineer every month for the last two and a half years! I am now extremely worried & distressed as I cannot afford to pay the huge bill. Can anyone please offer me any legal advice? Surely this is their mistake - so they should be held responsible? How does the law work in this situation?
They are now threatening to cut me off unless I sign a form siting responsibilty. Please help!!

You need to go to a citizens advice bureau.

First of all, you are within your rights to demand the meter is tested for accuracy.

If it is accurate, you will be liable for the energy you have used, however, it would be prudent of the comapny to come up with some kind of payment plan to make it more manageable for you to repay the outstanding amount.

You really should speak to them and find out what you can do to work together to resolve this.

If what you are saying is true, which I don't doubt for one minute, what you need to do is ask PowerGen how they came to the amount owed, you then can ask why they did not inform you of the amount outstanding well before the time they did, you stated that your meter was read by the meter reader, what you have to do is try and find out which company read your meter and let them know that the meter reader had miscalculated the reading. I feel you may have a case for malpractice against Power Gen and the company who read your meter.. I would like to advise you to seek legal advice because I am sure Power Gen may cancel the debit or reduce it to a manageable level

What you need to do is go and see your MP and the media I am sure they may get the result you are looking for.

Although your meter has been read, they have not altered the tariffs (price being charged) and believe it or not there is no law preventing them demanding the balance. Even though this is their fault. I've dealt with many cases like this and sometimes the only solution is to ask them to fit a pre-payment meter which ironically is, in itself, the dearest way to pay for fuel.
Sorry, I can't give you the answer you'd like to hear. In this case the law definitely sucks!

I should add that some of the companies reduce the bill by 50% so it's worth arguing, but do it in writing and preferably send by recorded delivery and keep a copy!

Hi, sorry to hear about you plight but the links below will help you to come to a fair settlement. Good luck

This is an error on their behalf, go to the citizens advice and contact ofcom, ofcom will normally write a letter to the energy company and this will put the sh1ts up them and will also mean they will have to call off any debt collectors and stop them trying to mess up your credit rating. Be persistent and dont give up, if you keep on fighting it there is a possibility you wont have to pay. We had a similair thing and I dont think(my g/f is out at mo, she will know definately) we ended up paying anything. Good luck and dont give up.

this sort of thing has happened to me with various gas/electricity companies. they are all bloody incompetents.
fight it, write to the head of the company (you should be able to find name and address on their website). be as bolshy as you like, and keep doing it. demand to know how they have come up with this charge, why they have only now sent the bill, etc etc. if you have kept all your paperwork from them gather it up as it will serve as evidence. you obviously have no problem articulating yourself - so write to them and give them hell!

British Gas tried to charge me £400 in one go, because they'd had me on the wrong tariff and not noticed, in the end i only had to pay about £150 and that in instalments. if they have undercharged you due to a problem of this sort you are legally liable, as you have received the product (electricity) but not paid in full for it. however, it is because of their incompetence not your dishonesty.

TallPaul
If your "meter has been read by their engineer every month for the last two and a half years" then there would not be such a massive disparity between what you have paid, and what you owe.

Phone them. Sort out a repayment plan.

Sue em...refuse to pay it..no way can they land this on you
