I think you should talk to a financial advisor. You need to review your budget so you know where your money is going. Perhaps your home is worth more than it was when you purchased it and you can cash out some of the equity. There are so many different things you can consider. You could also learn about investing on your own and look into some more aggressive growth type investments. Make sure you find someone you can trust if you go the financial advisor route. It is very important that you do not listen to people who only try to discourage you (for instance, the individual who suggested you could be homeless - PLEASE) - you can make this work for you.

I too am 50. If you would consider MLM type programs, I know of one that is doing extremely well right now. The company is called M2C Global, and they sell energy drinks and weight loss product that has to be tried to be believed. And the first sample is free now. Have a look.

Try to pay the most you can on your mortgage. Don't spend your money on stupid, unnecessary items, and whatever is left, put it into the mortgage.

Just because you say that you retire at 60 doesn't mean that you "have" to retire at that age. Many people nowadays who are considered "senior citizens" are still active in society regardless of their compensation.

If you owe 80,000, and you want to pay this debt off in ten years, then you could look at it from the vantage point of paying "no interest". If you paid no interest, the total debt you would pay, over the ten years, is divided up into 8,000 a year. That's just slightly under 1/3 of your salary, which is a similar chunk the government takes based on your income.

From that calculation, it seems you should be able to pay off your debts in time, unless you "over-indulged" a bit.

If you have very good credit, consider refinancing or perhaps hold off the refinancing until after you've broken down your debt a bit. Consider some of the new "lines of credit" (such as a new credit card) that give you a 'zero' percent interest rate for a period of time. This will only work if you have the self-discipline to ensure you not spend and pay off the amount needed.

You can retire and still be ahead if you take the spare change and make good investments, or, as others suggested, buy a winning lottery ticket. :)

That is why you are supposed to save money. A large portion of people cannot retire and work their whole lives. Sadly, unless you come into bucks soon - that will be you, or you will be homeless.
