I am a temp, I was off ill, and they decided to sack me.. what rights do i have, and can I appeal?
I worked for this company between June 07 & Jan 08, as an agency temp, and I had to have a couple of days off sick with a bug that many of the full time staff had, and they decided to sack me.

This week, I was back at this company to cover the job, while someone was off on holiday, but while there I got another bug, and had to have today off sick..

This afternoon, my agency told me I was no longer required, no reason given.

What rights do I have, I do not wish to cause any trouble, but this company do seem to treat their employees however they want. especially the agency workers.

THis is not a 2 bit organisation, it's a national business, who have many sites throughout the country.
This office is fairly new. and fully air-conditioned.
It's a place called Initial-Rentokil.

You have the right to look for a new job.

You must have know that it was a "Temporary Job" when you took it!

pingu says
as a temp you have practically no employment rights, sorry but thats the facts. i'm being paid off tomorow from the site i'm on, my agency didnt even bother informing me i found out from a workmate today. sadly temps are used as when and how then tossed out.

As a temp you really don't have any rights and you can be terminated without explanation unfortunately.

Discontent
Why would you want to work in an unhealthy place like that?
As a Temp you are just that, a Temp.
We used to employ Temps but they did'nt have the same commitment as full time staff. I tried explaining that it could lead to a permanent job, but they did'nt seem interested.
They always came late and went early so we decided to take on permanent staff. Less hassle and they do 8 hours a day.

As an agency worker, you are covered by the National Minimum Wage, working time legislation and health and safety and social security provisions. However, flexibility for both worker and employer is one of the features of agency work - and this means that, just as agency workers have the flexibility to take up and leave jobs at short notice, employers also have the flexibility to finish temporary work without being liable for unfair dismissal or redundancy pay. But do check your contract as it may include a notice period.

There are important differences between temporary agency workers, and those who are hired on fixed-term contracts. If you're an agency worker, your contract is with the agency, who must pay you even if the hiring company hasn't paid them. However, if you sign a fixed-term contract with the hiring company, the agency isn't responsible for paying you, and you have different rights. Make sure you know what kind of contract you're signing so that you're clear about your employment status.

National Minimum Wage Agency workers are usually considered to be ‘workers’, not ‘employees’. Workers’ main rights are:

paid holiday, rest breaks and limits on working time
no unlawful deductions from wages
the National Minimum Wage
not to be discriminated against under any of the equality legislation
