AES1203 | I am an supervisor and the productivity of my team has been really bad. Does anyone....? |
have any tips for improving productivity for teams?? |

As the others suggested, awards are always nice. But, not always helpful. If you start giving out awards for things done right, they will grow to expect it. If they no longer recieve awards, they will continue to lose productivity.
You need to be more direct with the issues. As a supervisor, you job isn't to be liked by all. If they won't work, make them. You are paying them for a reason, if they can't handle it, I'm sure they can be replaced. Once you put that in they're heads, they'll work. This may sound harsh, but spoiling them is so much worse. I've seen what that does in my company, and our guys would only do things when threatened. I have since fired some of those less ambitious people and our productivity has gone up 100 percent. |

Start a contest with a great prize for the winners. You have to boost moral in order to get productivity. |

Rewards. A prize of cash or something cool will always make people work harder. |

Sounds like morale is down. See if you can , offer a contest, for a gift certificate , or a gift card. They need to be motivated in a positive way. |

It would certainly help to know what your team does. Manufacturing versus office, etc. Rewards do not help. They create tension and animosity. If they are team rewards that is better. Have a meeting with the team. Ask them what the problem is. If the team does similar things compared to other teams, give them the results of all the teams. Show them they are the least efficient. If there are measureable items that can be published put it on a big chart. If there are problems outside the team that affect production, try to solve them. |

Show them the monthly or quarterly results and make them a part of the process... works for me and my crews. |

Here is an excerpt from an article that is very straight-forward and it may really help:
"Teams need to have reasons for taking responsibility. They also need to be given the authority to act on the responsibilities handed down to them. And they need to have consequences if those goals are not met. It would be nice to think everyone is motivated to be an exceptional employee strictly out of personal integrity. And in many instances that is the case, but not always." Copyright 2006 Colleen Kettenhofen
You can read the whole thing at: http://ezinearticles.com/?Why-Teams-Wont-Take-Responsibility&id=307834
I think it's a great place to start and you should really take it to heart. Print it out and read it over a few times if your are not confident. Just reiterating it to yourself may be necessary to get your courage up to follow any advice you may get. |

call a meeting and find out WHY they are lacking motivation,
honestly, a gift card or gift certificate isn't going to make
me work harder, our company gives out a paid vacation
for the worker of the year and that doesn't motivate me,
Paying me what the salary surveys say I am worth, will
motivate me above and beyond !!!! |

The whole reward process is garbage, they are already being rewarded by getting paid. This is my suggestion do team lunch or BBQ or something that helps everyone to know each other out of work. This also shows your employees that while you are focused on production you are also just like them. This helped me out alot as a NCO in the Army, it raised the morale in my squad 100%. But if you do the reward they will always expect something extra and it gets expensive. So invite them out to lunch on the company or have them and there families over or out to dinner. And if this doesn't work fire the least motivated person and this will send a clear message to the rest, but I would try the lunch first, because if you start firing people the others will get nervous and start making dumb mistakes and then some might even walk out. Let me know how you proceed and what worked, I love learning diffrent leadership methods. |

Fire the worst person. I'm sure that the rest will realize what's going to happen to them if they don't pick up the pace. It's tough being a leader, but you are being judged by their performance. Therefore there is not a lot of room to always be the nice guy. It is their job to perform, their reward is a paycheck already, and if they don't want to perform than it is time to find another person who will. Your paycheck relies on them performing. It is difficult to make these decisions, but for me it comes down to... Me taking care of my family, or them being complacent at work.... My family for me. Best of Luck. |
