My boss cut my hours 2 months ago to 20 a week. I am his only employe and he did it because business is slow. Feeling bad for him I continued to work my regular hours and got paid for just the 20. Well two months have gone by and business is picking up, but the money isn't. I asked him several times if he was going to increase his fees, which would put more money into the business, but he just hasn't done it. Meanwhile he kept paying himself thousands of dollars so the business account just drained.
I got to the point recently where I realized I just couldn't work for free anymore as my finances are too little. I told him I could only work the 20 hours I get paid for and need to use the extra time to find another part time job. I just feel so bad about it. Was it stupid of me to do since jobs are so scarce? |

Sister, you can not feel guilty about this. You need to look after you because he obviously isn't. He is only worried about numbero uno, himself. You did the right think and if you represented yourself as professionally as your explanation above, you got it right. He was taking advantage of your kindness.
Oh yes, and by law he has to pay you for all hours worked. |

Of course not! I understand that you feel bad for your boss because business is low but it's not your fault. Besides, even if jobs are scarce in this period, being underpaid makes your boss profit off of your extra work where as you are being ripped off for your own efforts. That is not morally right. He's paying himself more than he should and since you are his only employee, if he loses you, the company is done. If this company is so bad that the bank account is empty, well then honestly, it is basically done for. Go find another job! I'm sure that if you are pretty learned, you can find a job that pays higher. |

not at all I think that if you're not getting paid for your hours and you've spoken to him about a raise/more hours and he hasn't done anything about it then you should definitely look for another means to pay your bills. perhaps he will realize that he really does need you and you deserve being paid for your time. or the entire company will go under in which case you'll be happy to have somewhat gotten out while you can.

F your boss.......never feel sorry for them he is taking advantage of you, he's probably a old hag and is playing on you being young and naive. He had what was coming to him, I would have just never came back and then he would have to hire someone and pay them for the time worked. Never feel sorry for snakes and parasites. It's obvious he doesn't care about you so return the favor. |

The "stupid" part was continuing to work 40 hours after your boss had told you that your job was being cut back to 20. At that point, you should have started working 20 hours a week.
Your boss may be a nice guy, but he's playing you for a sucker. HE is the one who should be feeling guilty, not you. |
